Indeed.
As White I met 6...e5 once. I answered 7.Nde2 and won an easy game, exactly because of the reasons given by Gilchrist.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Must be said that if white had to sac on f5 like this it might well be good, but 7 Nf5 is hardly a good move is it Smiley

If white goes 7 Nf3 then he's going to be basically a pure tempo up on the 6 Be3 e5 7 Nf3 line after he goes Bg5 later on. Since that line is a very respectable try for an edge, this won't be fun.

It is worth noting that its not totally absurd to ask about this though - the dangerous weapons Sicillian book actually has a chapter about 6 .. e5 in the 6 Bc4 Classical Sicillian. That has been played by some entirely sane, pretty strong players. (Balkan/Epishin and not just once either.).

However Nc6 is a much more useful move than a6 in this sort of position!

Your questions are best answered by a general book on positional chess, such as 'Simple Chess' or 'Chess Strategy for Club Players'.

One reason of the Sozin is to prevent 6...e5 due to the excessive control over the d5 square. Similarly how 6...e5 is poor against 6. Bg5. In both of these variations, the d5 square will simply be too weak. Of course some people play it (one can play anything in any opening), but that does not mean it is not a poor move. How often do titled players play 6...e5 against the Sozin?
