black may have a good alternative in 6.Ba4 e4 7.Re1 Be7 8.Ne5 b5!? (a novelty apparently) 9.Bb3 Na5 and the bishop pair is lost after all

Any news on that front?

Any obvious white improvements over Al Modiahki-Mastrovasilis D - Istanbul Ol (9), 2012?

What could be more logical than preserving the bishop pair, while keeping it active? You don't go Bxc6 in the main line lopez.

Of course logical != effective Smiley

Although.... Two amusingly relevant games on my twic database, Sutovsky - Aronian 2004 and Ganguly - Ivanchuk 2005 (!).

Ok so black went 1.5/2 in those games and Aronian won another one vs a 2300, but the overall score is a very normal thing just over 52% and a healthy rating involved (and a non trivial gain for white.). So its not total rubbish.

In New In Chess 2011/8 Levon Aronian annotates his game against Ivanchuk from Moscow last year. He mentions in passing that 6.Ba4 "seems the most logical" move in the position after the common sequence 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.0-0 Nxe4 5.d4 Nd6.

I always thought this was the most harmless of white's move 6 options in the Berlin and a quick database trawl doesn't bring up anything to contradict that.

Now, fans of Aronian's annotations know that in addition to being very instructive he also has a very highly developed and subtle sense of humor. So, is this another deadpan joke or is there really anything serious after 6.Ba4?
