Thanks a lot! I overlooked 4...d6, and I agree that White doesn't have anything better than 5.Nc3 after it.

Back to the drawing board, I guess...

It gets mentioned and (relatively) commended in Watsons Modern Benoni repitoire book. Nothing dramatic that I can see in his recommendations mind. Mostly the Bg4 x f3 after Nbd2 stuff.

Although his idea of 4.. d6!? maybe rather relevant as he thinks it bypasses the whole thing, and that 5 de isn't much.

Modern Benoni with Nf3 - early e4

Hi!

I've now analysed for some time the following line against the modern Benoni:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4!?

The idea, in short, is to reach the MML, without allowing Black the deviations he has after 6.Nc3. These are usually based on either ...Bg4 or ...a6+...b5. As in the line above White's knight is still on b1, White has new options against both of these:

Against ...Bg4, Nbd2 followed by h3 seems to give White nice play in most cases. For an opening of the position the knight seems to be better on f3 than on c3. And ...b5 is quite double-edged, as Black's ...b4 after Whites a4 doesn't win a tempo, and White can play Nb1-d2-c4.

For example: 6...g6 7.h3 a6 (Bg7 8.Bd3 reaches the MML) 8.Bd3 b5 9.a4!, 6...a6 7.Bd3 Bg4 8.Nbd2 or 6...Bg4 7.Nbd2 (7.h3 might also be critical) Nbd7 (attacking e4) 8.Qb3 Qb6 9.Qc2

Is there a known solution for Black? Or can White force the MML after all?
