So...what does he recommend against the KID?

I've been interested in this DVD as well. It looks like a version of my old 1.Nf3 repertoire.

Any ideas what he recommends against the Dutch? Transposition to a main line with a later d2-d4, or a pure English style setup?

From the contents I'm assuming that he meets the King's Indisn with a transposition to the standard fianchetto setup as White.

in order:

No.
Yes.
Not that I could make out.

Verdict: a dismal affair.

I liked this DVD a lot personally. But it depends on what you want to get out of it. If you're already an experienced Nf3 player, I doubt you'll learn anything new from this. However, if like me you're a 1.d4 player, looking to make the transition to 1.Nf3, and know nothing about the differences between d4 and Nf3, I think this DVD addresses that issue very well. It probably also makes a difference what strength you're playing at, I'm at about 1950 strength (perhaps at about 2100+ you will need more than this?), and I've scored 2.5/3 in my county league games using only this product. Didn't get any opening advantage, but got safe, pleasant positions that allowed me to outplay my opponents in the middle-game.

OK I couldn't resist and bought it today.

The sections are:
01: avoiding main lines 1.. b5, 1.. d5 and 2.. Nc6, 1 .. b6
02: "the hour of Bc8" - 1 .. d6 and 2 .. Bg4
03: Dutch 1 .. f5
04: King's Indian Setup for White (note: this is NOT the KIA, it is instead white playing against the king's indian, playing c4 d4 etc)
05: 1 .. c5
06: English version of Grünfeld/Queen's Indian 1 .. Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5 4 cxd5 / 1 .. b6
07: Nimzoindian Setup: 1 .. Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 Bb4
08: Catalan (without d4): 1 .. Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 g3 d5 4 Bg2
09-13: "The big 1 .. d5 challenge", 2 e3, 2 g3
14: Hedgehog with e6 1 .. Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 Nc3 e6 4 g3
15: Hedgehog with g6 1 .. Nf6 2 c4 b6 3 g3
16: English 4 Knights
17: English with 3 .. e5 (1 .. Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 Nc3 e5)
18: Summary

So seems like he's covering too many lines at the same time but that means that probably there's not enough detail for any even half-serious repertoire. It's more maybe for people like me who like to follow GM games and would like to know a few ideas of what's going on. Nevertheless, GM Ftacnik is a pleasant person who does offer nice explanations.

I also have some 360 games in ChessBase where Ftacnik plays 1.Nf3 himself. He usually plays 1...d5 2.d4, 1...c5 2.c4 and 1...Nf6 2.c4. And he has played some 80 Catalans via different move-orders.

Quoting the blurb:

The explanations deal with all the big challenges – the English Opening, Nimzo-Indian systems, the Catalan, the Dutch Defence and of course that annoying reply 1...d5. Video running time: 4 hours 33 min

This does not sound like the KIA to me.

I believe it's Anti-English (1.c4 e5) and Anti-Nimzo because of 1.Nf3! The video sample shows the Reversed KI. Ftacnik is (was) also a regular commentator for the Flank Openings in ChessBase.

I can sort of sympathise with Ftacnik since I once tried to cover a complete White repertoire in four hours in a lesson and found it impossible to cover any of the lines in a lot of depth. That said I think that Ftacnik's books are of a higher quality than his DVDs, which is not too surprising.

@Antillian

I'm not sure if the thread should be moved to General Chess since it's not clear to me whether Ftacnik is calling the Nimzo-English the 'Nimzo-Indian', for instance. Personally I'd find it very strange to try and cover so many main line openings in four hours, and the whole idea of 1.Nf3/2.c4 is normally to reach some 1.d4 openings and avoid others.

I think it's maybe more about the KIA and related tries? It's just a weird product, usually they say clearly which lines are covered, and now it's just.. 1. Nf3? There are a lot of different ways to play 1. Nf3, it would be nice if they told us which ones the DVD covers.

edit: the link is http://www.chessbase-shop.com/en/products/ftacnik_1_nf3_a_variable_repertoire_fo... and the description

"1.Nf3 - a variable Repertoire for White’ is the name for a comprehensive opening system strategy based on security and choice. The old maxim of perceiving 1.e4 openings as tactical and more dangerous as opposed to the more positional and peaceful 1.d4 openings no longer reflects the modern world of chess openings. This repertoire DVD is the fruit of a lifetime’s experience, as the author Lubomir Ftacnik uses it actively in his practice. The system gives all White players the chance to fine-tune the level of exposure and risk – from the main lines of all the great 1.d4 and 1.c4 openings all the way to the concept of playing “Black” lines with an extra tempo – as in the King’s Indian in reverse. The explanations deal with all the big challenges – the English Opening, Nimzo-Indian systems, the Catalan, the Dutch Defence and of course that annoying reply 1...d5. Video running time: 4 hours 33 min."

My initial thought is that you really can't expect much from a DVD purporting to offer a complete White repertoire in 4 hr.

And this should be in General Chess section just as the "An interesting new chesspub member-authored book" thread should also be in General Chess since both are about more than flank openings

Did anyone order/download this DVD? The video sample seems rather uninspiring, I learned now that 1 Nf3 d5 is a reversed 1 d4 Nf6. Maybe they should include a sample that is not the Introduction?
