There is an old article in New in Chess Magazine no.29 by Alexander Moroz, which is a bit dated (1993).

Yes, but it's old and in Dutch (possibly in German too): Euwe/Samarian, De Opening 11C, Open Spelen III 1983.
They recommend 5...f6 with 5...Qd6 (Bronstein) as another reasonable option.

Thanks for this.  I "read" (inasmuch as I deciphered the notation) a book on From's Gambit in German once.  I had some German in school, Dutch isn't that great of a leap, and then there's always Google translate Wink

Good to know about the 2005 book.  I probably need some material on the 0-0 line anyway as I play 1...e5 as Black.  EDIT: Now I see some have found me precise web addresses and prices in the meantime -- thanks.

Addendum: I've just checked for Seeley's recommendation, and it should be easy to find it.

Shamed by Zwischenzugzwang's diligent efforts Smiley, I've quickly checked for availability myself. The book I recommended is available in brand-new condition for £14.99 from Chess Direct, a specialist UK-based supplier. They will ship overseas.

There's probably also some analysis in A.Suetin, "Spanisch. Klassisches System bis Offene Verteidigung", Sportverlag Berlin 1981. I have all those books, but they are somewhere boxed away at my parents home, so I cannot have a quick check. It shouldn't be difficult to get it second-hand.

Addendum: I've just checked for Seeley's recommendation, and it should be easy to find it. I found the following offer:

Quote:
Panczyk, Krzysztof & Ilczuk, Jacek:
Ruy Lopez Exchange
2005, ISBN: 9781857443899

London: Everyman, 2005. Pb, 192pp. VG with clean contents. Includes over 70 model games. . Soft Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Everyman, 2005

(-)  GBR  Glynn's Books

They want 11.79 USD (I don't know why the quote the price in USD), that's the cheapest offer. The cheapest offers on the American continent I've found are from Ebay, they want 14.83 CAD, Amazon.com, 25 USD, and Biblio.com, also 25 USD.

What do people mean when they say "Chess is the pawn of the soul"?

You might also consider Ruy Lopez Exchange (Panczyk and Ilczuk, Everyman Chess 2005). It's more up-to-date and also has the advantage (for you) of being in English. I think it's still in print, too, but I haven't checked. The book uses the 'illustrative games' format and covers 5.Nc3 over the course of eight games in the first chapter.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Seeking analysis of 5. Nc3 in the Exchange

Is there a good source of analysis on 5. Nc3 in the Exchange variation?  I've found 3 games with the line in my copy of Hannak's book on Lasker and that's certainly a start.

Did Fischer ever play it before moving on to 5. 0-0; that could be interesting.  Did Keres analyze it; it's called the Keres variation on chess.com but unless I'm missing something, I can't find any games where Keres had White in chesslive.de.

Of course there are plenty of games in chesslive.de but I'm looking for the best annotated examples.  Does anybody have Tartakower et. al.'s "500 Master Games"?  From a look at the TOC it looks like there's a game between Capa and Janowski, but as good as the book might be, I'm not going to buy it at this point for one game.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions
