@JEH: sorry for not answering the question about the Pirc (I don't own the DVD), but it's the discussion about the Caro-line which I am interested in.

While I agree that

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5
4. Bd3 (4.Bf4!? to avoid the Qc7-stuff is an interesting move-order)
4. ... Nc6 5. c3 Nf6 6. Nf3 Bg4 7. Bf4 e6 8. Qb3 Qc8 9. Nbd2 Be7 10. O-O O-O 11. Ne5 Bh5 12. Qc2 Bd6
is better than 12. ... Bg6, I am not sure if that's a big problem for white.

He can just continue in typical style with
13.Rae1 Qc7 14.Re3!?

Now in Weeramantry-Astaneh Lopez, Gibraltar 2012 black played the illogical
14. ... Bg6?! 15.Ng6: hg6: (15. ... Bf4:? loses a pawn after 16.Nf8: Be3: 17.Nh7:) 16.Bd6: Qd6: 17.f4
and White was all set for his traditional attack along the h-file and was much better soon.

More logical would be
14. ... Rac8 15.Qb1 a6 16.Rh3 (forcing the advantagous exchange) Bg6 17.Ng6: hg6: 18.Bd6: Qd6: 19.f4
with decent attacking chances for White. I don't see easy equality in this line even after 12. ... Bd6.

What am I missing?

(By the way, I am not defending Dzindzi's approach, which I also don't like, I am just arguing about this concrete position).

What does he recommend vs. the Pirc?

Bg6 is suboptimal, but Davies, King and Dzindzi ALL gave it as a main line for black. And they have nothing against Bd6... which is much, much better.

I don't get it -- as far as I know Huebner's ...Bd6 has been a standard book move (sometimes adorned with an exclam, as in NCO) since he played it 30 years ago.  I thought ...Bg6, as in a 40-year-old game between Browne and Larsen, was considered suboptimal.

6.Ne2 Bg4 7.f3 Bd7 8.Na3 a6 9.Nc2 e5 given by Schandorff seems more than comfortable for Black.

This 6.h3 is too slow, just 6...e5 looks logical. In this Qc7 line e5 break is normal so here it should be justyfied.

King gave line with Ne2 and later Na3-Nc2. I think this not so good for white.

Problems with Dzindzi and King are, that they don't see obvious improvements in main lines.

King:

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. Bd3 Nc6 5. c3 Nf6 6. Nf3 Bg4 7. Bf4 e6 8. Qb3
Qc8 9. Nbd2 Be7 10. O-O O-O 11. Ne5 Bh5 12. Qc2  and now Bd6 is equal.

Dzindzi:

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. Bd3 Nc6 5. c3 Nf6 6. Bf4 Bg4 7. Qb3 Qc8 8.
Nd2 e6 9. Ngf3 Be7 10. O-O O-O 11. Ne5 Bh5 12.Wae1 is Dzindzi line but here too Bd6 is simply equal.

Thought I recalled an interesting game played by King and cited in Kovacevic's London System book, which went something like 3. ed cd 4. Bd3 Nc6 5. c3 Nf6 6. Bf4 Bg4 7. Qb3 Qc8 8. Nd2 e6 9. Ngf3 Be7 10. 0-0 0-0 11. Rfe1 Bh5 12. Ne5 Nxe5 13. de Nd7 14. c4 triangle Bxh7+ and Qh3.
