4.Qc2 d5 5.cxd5 c5!? (Topalov Gambit) is a sharp try

There was some analysis by Palliser in DW Nimzo-Indian

In the same book, there's also a chapter on 4.Qc2 0-0 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.Qxc3 b5!? - another way to make white's life difficult...

In a calmer vein, I think Kortchnoï's 4.Qc2 0-0 5.a3 Bxc3 6.Qxc3 b6 7.Bg5 Ba6!? has good practical value OTB

Thanks Vass, I must have exchanged at c3 to early in practical games and starred to blind at engine when analysing the games. In  the finnally position I rather play black!

Well, but statistics say black is doing better..
Here some lines for a possible repertoire for black:

Cool

The same thing can also be said in the Kasparov-Short 1/2-1/2 Wch game line but that line has at least historical feelings.

The 4 Qc2 d5 6 a3 line is not a problem, I like blacks play there.

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2,  4...d5 and 4...0-0 can easily transpose if White plays 5.a3, but never transpose
in case of 4...d5 5.cd ed 6.Bg5 and 4...0-0 5.e4. Surely this must come into consideration ?

Looking at chesspub subscription database, there are actually 35 games after Qc2 c5.
Quick look at some games shows comments like "a typical Sulskis inea - playing a provactive move that balances the edge of soundness".

I quite like 4...0-0, too.. A recent correspondence game of mine went like this:

Not even a slightest concern for black when white plays somehow schematic..  Wink

Well, a possible opening repertoire for black with 4...d5 can be:

Nothing special. The themes for black pieces' development are well known and similar to each other. But, there are some subtleties for white, of course.. I'm tempted to show some white tries. For example, if they try to push some pawns, black is fine..imho.. Let's see:

And here black can continue with 13...c4!? with equal chances for both sides.
While the stem game for white is definitely Dreev-Movsesian, Rus chT (Olginka, Ugra 2011) 1-0:

...with slightly better endgame for white.. And here black has to fight for equality with 17....Rab8!? 18. Rc1 c5 19. dxc5 bxc5 20. Nd2 Bd5 21. Rc2 Kg7 22. Rfc1 Rd8 or similar..
The eternal fight for equality, you know!..  Wink

Emms's MBM book recommended 4...0-0 5.a3 Bc3 6.Qc3 d5 and 4...c5 5.dc5 Bc5 6.Nf3 Qb6. The best source for the Macieja Variation is probably still Vigorito's 'Challenging the Nimzo-Indian' book, though I'd assume ChessPublishing have some games played after 2006 in this 7...b6 line.

The new "Move by Move" book has some coverage of both the 4...c5 hedgehog stuff and 4...d5 if I remember correctly (or maybe it was 4...0-0 intending 5...d5; something like that).

Thanks for the advises, perhaps I stick to d5. I am afrraid You are right, one can not force white to play sharp interesting stuff. I will simply have to be prepared to outplay opponents in an equal position. Also Nimzo with Bd2 is a move I like to face since white players tend to missplace their pieces a lot by them self, I have about 41 - 1 + score in this line.

Still c5 and hedgehog is still an interesting suggestion but unforutanlly I have no book concrete theory from this line and have very little experince with hedgehog, especially in this concrete position and I will soon play in Swedish champinship so I play something I have experince with.

Stick to 4.Qc2 d5 - it really is Black's sharpest try. Plus, in any opening White always has the option of playing something solid at the cost of giving Black instant equality. I mean, White can always play 4.Bd2 or a London or a Colle... you can't let stuff like that bother you.

The Macieja Variation maybe (i.e. 4...c5 5.dc5 0-0 6.a3 Bc5 7.Nf3 b6). Leads to Hedgehog type positions if that's your cup of tea.

o-o in general a little less fun. (as d5 is often very sharp.).

But then we're talking about how to get white to play slightly interesting moves, so goodness what'd work - it could be anything Smiley Or nothing, although if white was going to stodge I don't know why they'd start with Nc3.
