Sample line :
1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. Nf3 d6 5. d4 cxd4 6. Qxd4 e6 7. Nbd2 a6 8. Be2
Nc6 9. Qe4 f5 !? 10. exf6 Nxf6 11. Qh4 d5 =/=+

Svesh gave 9...de 10. Nxe5 Nxe5 11. Qxe5 Qd6 =.  Both of these lines are comparable to some old stuff in 1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. d4 cd 5. Qxd4 ...

4...d6 is simply a bad move - after 5.d4 cd4 6.Qd4! e6 7.Nbd2 Nc6 8.Bb5 Bd7 9.Bc6 Bc6 10.Nc4 White has a permanent advantage.

It't interesting but...

1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. Nf3 d6 5. d4 cxd4 6. Qxd4 e6 7. Nbd2 a6 ! is equal i think. Black can play Nc6 next and he have quick development.

Sample line :
1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. Nf3 d6 5. d4 cxd4 6. Qxd4 e6 7. Nbd2 a6 8. Be2
Nc6 9. Qe4 f5 !? 10. exf6 Nxf6 11. Qh4 d5 =/=+

"Simply a bad move"?  I notice that Sveshnikov in a 2008 Yearbook article stated that it should lead to a slight advantage for White, but his analysis of 7...a6 (instead of 7...Nc6) includes e.g. some possibilities for Black given as leading to "unclear," "chances for both sides" or to no evaluation.

5..cd is a problem for me, since i normally delay d2-d4 in favor of Bc4.... I know Tiviakov played some games with  5.Na3, but what's the point of this move?

hmm ...I notice Tiviakov playing 5. Na3 Nc6 6. ed, which was just mentioned by Sveshnikov as interesting.  ECO (a few years after Sveshnikov) awarded 6. ed an exclam, continuing with 6...Qxd6 (6...ed, as played by an opponent of Tiviakov, is given as dubious) 7. d4 (with an exclam and Informant-speak saying White is targeting the black queen), but the further stuff doesn't indicate that it should lead to advantage for White.

It often transposes to the usual lines after 5.d4

In that Informant monograph by Sveshnikov I've mentioned before, he considered various stuff and seemed to think 5. d4 was the way to go, but he didn't mention 5...cd ...

1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. Nf3 d6 - how to react here?
"Normal" move is 4..Nc6, but 4..d6 is interesting. How to fight for advantage with white?
