As I wrote in the "Spanish repertoire" thread, in my opinion 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a5 4. 0-0 Nd4! is fine for Black. 4...Na7 is a brilliant idea, but too extreme.

This one seems reasonable for me..  Roll Eyes

Black is close to losing after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a5 4. O-O Na7 5. Bc4 b5 6. Be2 d6 7. d4 Bg4 8. dxe5 and now for example 8...Bxf3 9. Bxf3 (gxf3 seems to lead to an opposite bishop ending) dxe5 10. Qe2 Bc5 11. Rd1 Qe7 12. Bg4
I played this through with Houdini and Black seems to lose a pawn in every variation, and often lose the game as well

Well, that's it!
Good or bad analyses, I don't know..
All I can say is that there was no Rybka's, Houdini's and alike.. It was 1992, after all..
As for Dr Georgi Popov, not just every man that ever played chess (no matter if OTB or correspondence one) has a memorial 12th category tournament called upon his name.
And not every day we are lucky to invent a variation of Ruy Lopez, that have its own name because of our own games and analyses.  Wink

Of course, the assessment of the variation imho is +/=. The problem for black can be +/-  Wink

Well, it looks quite ±-ish to me, and I'm unconvinced of the "brilliance" of an analysis that doesn't consider such a (IMO) simple and good approach by White.

Of course, you can have your own opinion.
The problem is that if I have to believe your opinion (if no engine approved) or the one of the late GM Dr Georgi Popov - guess who'll be the winner!  Grin
Nothing personal though! Just a preference of mine.  Wink

I have never heard of Popov, though sure he was a very personable chap. And if he had pets, no doubt he treated them exceedingly well.

The good think about chess is that one lives and dies by analysis, by consideration of moves. If one is to obliged to talk of reputation, I here trust Kylmeister who speaks considerable sense within this forum. Bulgarian Popov, with ...a5, engenders no faith. Notably a corr GM, rather than OTB it also must be noted.

I side with those who distrust the analysis of 3...a5. Idle tosh.

I can't believe that when Stefan Bücker and others have written about 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 ed 4. Nxd4 Bc5 5. Be3 Qf6 6. c3 Nge7 7. Bb5 0-0 8. 0-0, they failed to consider 8...a5 ...

What's the point of a5 move? For me it's illogical and it breaks the basic chess rules.

Then you must have read many good opening books...as Stefan said recently.  Grin

Simple 6.Bxc6 is a good version of exchange spanish for white.

I recall perhaps those games appearing in the Yearbook.

Regarding the nice-looking (for White) two-bishop position arising in Kusinski-Popov, I don't know what's supposed to be attractive about Black's position after, say, 9. Qe2 Nf6 10. Rd1 Bd6 and now the natural 11. Nd2 (instead of 11. Nc3).

Of course, the assessment of the variation imho is +/=. The problem for black can be +/-  Wink
