Hm, White scores incredibly well with 12.a4 as a whole, which is certainly responsible for new developments like the Perunovic-Variation.

A book by the name giver called "The Modernized Benko" has been anounced by Thinkers Publishing. I doubt this will cover the old main line though.

A shame that this thread has gone quiet. 13.Ra3 seems to score incredibly well for white - is this mentioned in any books on the opening, and does anyone know the current theoretical status of the line?

Well, the main point of 12.a4! Qa5 13.Bd2 is that 13...Rfb8 can be answered by 14.Nb5! and this is obviously not possible after 12.Qe2 Qa5! 13.Bd2 Rfb8 when White has to defend b2. Now 14.Nd1 Qa6 is typical and seems okay for Black as does 14.b3 Ng4 15.Rac1 Qa6.

Got it.  Thanks.   Smiley

I think 12.a4 is the better move order because 12.Qe2 allows Black to organise his queenside counterplay in time with 12...Qa5!, e.g. 13.a4 Rfb8 14.Bd2 Rxb2! 15.Nd1 Rxd2 16.Nxd2 Nxd5 (or Nxe4) is fine for Black.

In this 12.Qe2 Qa5 line what happens if White plays 13.Bd2 (as he does after 12.a4 Qa5)?

This is not possible after 12.a4 Qa5 13.Bd2. Also it´s not clear if e2 is really the queen´s best square, at least not so early.

As Black I would avoid the whole issue with the Perunovic-Variation where Black seems to be okay (at least for now  Wink).

Is there a clear choice between 12.a4 and 12.Qe2 right now?

This early ...Qa5 business seems to have become very trendy all of a sudden. It not only avoids this but some other tricky lines as well.

6...Bg7 is also covered in an article by Kuzmin in the latest Chessbase Magazine (163). He calls the line Perunovic Variation and suggests that 8.a7 might be White´s best. I haven´t looked at it yet.

I investigated this line a month or two ago after it was covered in a ChessPub update and also thought it was the most promising way to play against the Benko Accepted. It's been played quite a few times before - e.g.:

16...Ne5!? & 20...Nxd2!?

I remember when I was looking at it that I thought perhaps White should start trying 8.e5!? - maybe Black has good play here as well, but it seems critical.

thanks for quick reply Vass, or GM level maybe, or super GM, etc. etc.

It is a problem line theoretically though, no doubts about it.

Hi, IsaVulpes!
What you're missing is 14.Bd2! (or even 13.Bd2)

Here I post some games out of my correspondence chess database. Though most of them are not high quality games, you can find the right ideas for white:

Has anyone dabbled with:

The idea is very simple: White threatened to 'lock up' the Queenside with Nb5;
For now this is stopped, as both a4 (which one can actually take here, unlike in ..Qa5 lines, due to the Rook being able to capture first) and e4 are being attacked twice.
With the Nc3 stuck in place, a4 becomes "just a weakness"; since her majesty is also eyeing c3 and b2, White's entire queenside just looks frozen in place to me?!

The queen obviously seems to be in a rather dangerous spot there, but before White can start bothering her, he has to to fortify three lone pawns - which should give black plenty time to eg centralize his knights, generating counterplay?

I'm most definitely neither a good enough player nor sufficiently well-versed in engine analysis to add much to the discussion, but this looked like the by far most logical move to me - curious whether it just got overlooked, or I missed the reason for it being an insufficient try.

E: For the reasons listed, 13.Qc2 seems like a better try for white to me; defending a4, controlling b3, and not giving up protection of the b2-pawn after an eventual Bd2;
Though I still believe that ..Qb6-Qb4 should be fine?
Really interested in what I'm blind for in this position!

In addition, Black needs to solve his problems in the variation in atticus' post #93 after 17.Ra3 Ne5 18.Nxe5 Bxe5 19.Bh4 Nc7 and now 20.g4!?N. This move has the advantage of saving the h4-bishop whilst maintaining the option of securing the e-pawn with f3, something that f4 does not do (you can see the in variations stemming from Haugen-Gonzalez that this is a persistent theme).

I think when I looked at it yesterday that I thought 20...Nxb5 21.axb5 Ra5!? led to some drawn endings, but I can't remember all of the details at the moment. I wasn't sure this was something I'd want to play as Black OTB, but then again, I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid - very few players' preparation at my level is this deep.

With regards to the second game after 17.g4, is there anything wrong with 17...g5, e.g. these games:

It's interesting in that the Black player is the same, but one appears to be an OTB game, and the other is is CC game.

Niko's suggestion of ...Rb8-b7 is certainly interesting, but still far from giving Black decent compensation, I'm afraid.

I have analysed those games, and I think that white's just better.
Recently Ramirez tried 14...e6 straight away, but I think the move is just bad.

We played two games with Valeri at a thematic tournament in chess.com. Both ended in draws, are far from flawless (no computer assistance), yet I think his plan effectively defuses Naka's 16.Nd1, while I cannot say I was very happy with my position at the (critical?) variation in which Black drops the e7 pawn.

Any thoughts are welcome...

Totally agree - hence my comment. I dug these games out of an e-mail I sent to Nikos when he was writing the newsletter and lazily glanced at the ratings - most of which are in the 2300's.

In my opinion not. My current ICCF rating is 2071 and I'm a nobody. A ICCF rating of 2139 is definitely not "high level". Players like Dlugolecki and me are totally capable of screwing things up, with or without silicon assistance.

I should have been more careful with the label "high level" - I'm assuming that with a rating over 2000 people are using a computer and investing some time. My experience on ICCF is that the people who aren't using computers are quickly dispatched and in the range of ~1700. I haven't run into many that fall into this category though.

Grzegorz Dlugolecki (white in the first game) is really not a high level CC player, not when I played him on LSS anyway, I guess he's a very decent player OTB but doesn't use engines (or a pretty bad one)

I analyzed this line a little over a year ago when it's popularity and publicity was spiking, and the line that Tay's offering up is the best that I could find as well. There are a few other high level CC games that are worth looking at - they might be in his notes, I didn't check:

There's a new book on sight. http://www.amazon.com/Benko-Gambit-Move/dp/1781941572/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8...

It is not absolutely clear from the sample pages but it looks like Tay's offered solution is a second pawn sacrifice as played by Gonzalez.

After 12...Ra6 13. Qc2 Qa8 14.Ra3 there is also the option of 14...Rb8 as given in the QC newsletter (Ametanoitos).

http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/ebooks/Newsletter017July2013.pgn ;

The 7...Qa5 concept is interesting so I guess I will go for the Kindle option even though I have the book...

Ps.
14. Ra3 is not covered in the forum article in NIC YB 108.

To see what is wrong with this idea for black, compare the positions after move 11 in these two lines.

Black has swapped Bxf1 for Qa5. Qa5 is a reasonable move to have in of course, but not always best and that bishop certainly can't stay on a6 (or b7) for ever. Fairly neutral overall.

However, White has managed Rb1 and Rhf1 for free, and doesn't have the latent weaknes on the a8/h1 diagonal that sometimes motivate h3, Kg1, Kh2 instead. The Bd3 could maybe turn annoying later too and if black plays the logical Bxd3 at some point soon, white looks to be another development tempo up on normal.

None of these are massive problems perhaps but it is entirely unobvious how it might qualify as an improvement for black Smiley You need some good, concrete reasons for it.

Hi and welcome to this great forum!
As for posting pgn-files here, it's easy. After pressing the "Reply" button, you'll see buttons on the top of the box where you write. When you want to publish a pgn-game, first press the pgn-button and right after that you'll have to place the text of the pgn between the brackets (pgn] and [/pgn).

It will show your text just like this:

p.s. it's my first post on this forum. so if someone will tell me how more readable game text can be posted here - I will do so. I could not find that option Sad

So the dream is still alive (apparently)  Smiley

I'm sure something will turn up in due course. As noted upthread, the Benko has been 'refuted' numerous times, and it's still around. Although it's also possible that its deployment will migrate lower down the rating spectrum, where vague counterchances flourish.

The 12...Ra6 variation is analysed in the Forum section of the new NIC YB 108 by Peter Boel under the heading "Fighting the a4-Nb5 Set-Up".

Yes this was my thought also. Therefore I looked at a quick ...e6 from black. At least I havnt found anything that should scare white from  playing Nikos (slow) variation. Here is the closest I got:

And if a quick ...e6 in the Benkø doesnt punish slow white opening play, then I dont know what will.

@gwnn

The basic idea is not to enter the Kaufman variation with 12.a4. Aveskulov gives this move a "!" and says he dont find equality after this move. And that after spending months on this variation. Therefore he suggest an alternative solution with this 7...Qa5 idea. Whether his idea will stand the test of time remains to see, I guess.

Nikos idea ( as usual  Smiley) of 8.Bd3 followed by 9.Rb1 and 10.Nf3 seems like a very interesting try for white. A bit time consiming, but after looking at some variations with a quick ...e6 it seems to give white the typical edge in the end.  Maybe its better for black to play some ordinary Benkø moves like: 9...d6., 10...Nbd7, with the idea of ...Ng4-e5 as white`s bishop is on d3. White still has the typical edge, but at least he has some chanses to go wrong as in a normal Benkø.

And thx to TalJechin for posting this ...Qa8 idea in the Kaufman variation. Aveskulov doesnt mention it. And regarding Nikos discovery above, I might think this possibillity is a better  practical try for the black player.

In what way is Qa5 an improvement over Bxf1? Or is the point simply that it's a much less common move so it's more fun to play? At first sight it would look like white just gained a few tempi over the king walk stuff but I admit of course that this is just an unqualified first impression. Can someone explain to me the basic idea of leaving the bishop on a6?

Well, I would imagine so, as 15.Bd2 looks like a tactical weakness due to the Nxd5-idea. The engine prefers 15.Re1+=

Still, the four games with 14...Rc8 in my db - with much stronger players than myself on both sides - have all gone 15.Bd2.

As I mentioned, I rarely play vs the Benko and I don't play it myself so I leave the analysis to those in the know. But imho, putting the Queen on a8 looks like an interesting idea, that may be worth exploring.

Indeed! But what about 9. Rb1!? first with the idea to play 10.Nf3 next while avoiding this tactic? OK, White doesn't really avoid this. For example Black can still play something like  9...Nxd5 10. exd5 Bxc3+ 11. bxc3 Qxc3+ 12. Ke2 Qe5+ 13. Be3 Qxd5 but after say 14. Nf3 Qxa2+ 15. Kf1 Bxd3+ 16. Qxd3 d6 17. g3 O-O 18. Kg2 i still prefer White. Anyway, interesting stuff here and Black might be OK IF he plays really accurate and in the set-up i am proposing the value of the B at d3 and the R at b1 might be questionable and on the other hand this ...Qa5 manouvre is typical in other positions (for example that f4 line) but i am not convinced at all, still.

It fails for tactical reasons I suppose. Otherwise this would be a nice set-up for white indeed. After 8.Bd3 and 9.Nf3 my Stockfish says 9...Nxd5 and then take on c3. Thats why the Ng1 goes to e2 I think.

@ TalJechin
Yes he covers 7.Nf3. Usually it ends up in a transposition to ML though, if black plays correct.

I don't really play the Volga/Benko for either side, but since Black seems to despair about the chances after 12.a4 I thought I'd mention the following idea with 12...Ra6 and 15....c4. That Nxd5 tactic must be sweet to play!

Kaufman also gives this idea for White in just one game, but he gives the move order 7.Nf3 d6 8.e4 instead, does Aveskulov address that?

He presents his analysis of 12.Qe2 and 12.a4! lines first. After admitting black's position is inferior in the a4 line, he advocates bypassing this in an early stage with

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 g6 6.Nc3 Bxa6 7.e4 Qa5!?

After this he analyses three main tries for white: 8.Bxa6, 8.e5 and 8.Bd2

8.Bd3! is natural and critical i think. The idea is that the typical 8...Bxd3 9.Qxd3 Qa6 is met by 10.Nb5! Qb6 11.a4. Does he look to that? My first impression is that this quick ...Qa5 is suspicious...

Back to topic.
He analyse: 8...Bg7  9.Nge2-d6 10. 0-0- 0-0
and states that :

Any Benkø player should be happy with black chances here.

I tend to agree at my level.

If you're ordering from Europe, you should probably choose to buy from a European amazon. For example the new Burgess book is 14.94$ , 6.94 £ and 7.94 Euro.

Could it be that you and Stigma have simply missed the different currency and only looked at the numbers of the price?

We're not that stupid  Smiley

I'm not even allowed to buy Kindle books from amazon.co.uk or amazon.de. Once I log in and the site recognizes I'm from Norway, I'm told to buy from Amazon.com instead. And when I go there, the price increases...

If the real price of the Burgess book with VAT included is $14.94, why does it say "$9.95, £6.94, €7,94" on the Gambit website http://www.gambitbooks.com/ebooks.html ? I still find that misleading; increasing a price by 50% is not a "minor fluctuation".

Sorry, no offence intended, thought it might be a plausible explanation at the time...

I never buy from Amazon anyway... Smiley

But since Fllg could buy it for the published price, it may be be an issue between Amazon and its Norwegian customers which Gambit may not know about.
Perhaps it includes some customs fee for non-EU countries... Strange though that you're not allowed to buy from .de or co.uk instead. Undecided

I just did some googling and found out that Amazon even charges a few bucks from Norwegians for material that is free!  Shocked
http://weirdmage.blogspot.se/2011/02/amazons-hidden-extra-charges-does.html

edit: apparently they claim the fee is some kind of 3G roaming charge, made mandatory for some customers, even if they don't have 3G...

8.Bd3 is only a sideline in his analysis. He continues differently and concludes Black can be happy with his chances there. Again I don´t think it´s right to reveal his analysis here even if it´s only a sideline.

But I would also welcome if Gambit would decide to publish this part of the chapter for free on their website. Even if I have already paid for it.  Smiley

Well, believe it or not. Stigmas words are very true. Today I also ordered "a cunning rep" by Burgess and excatly the same thing happend. From 9.95 to 14.94 dollars.

I also got an unconvincing answer from IM Chandler at the GAMBIT publishing site regarding the update on Aveskulov omitted line(s)  in the King Walk Chapter.

Its not that I can`t  afford to buy the books or Kindle or whatever. The the thing is that a publisher or an author with respect for himself would solve this thing otherwise, I think. Its a matter of hounor.

The way I see it GAMBIT has failed to live up to their reputation.  Now the first letter in GAMBIT stands for "Greed" in my opinion.

Maybe, but it´s always admirable if an author analyses something new and original. In this case Aveskulov opens an almost completely new chapter of Benko theory. As always in such cases only time will tell if it holds up to scrunity.

Of course it would have been very nice from Gambit and Aveskulov to present an update for free, but only because another publisher does this regularly doesn´t mean Gambit has to work the same way.

It´s not so common nowadays but there was a time when it was normal buisness that revised and updated versions of books appeared and certainly no one would have asked to get the new material for free only because he bought the first edition.

I have bought the paper version of this book and have been so curious about Aveskulov´s treatmen of 11.a4 that I was willing to spend the few extra bucks for the kindle version. But I don´t own a Kindle and wasn´t interested in buying one for this purpose.

Fortunately Amazon offers a ´Kindle for PC-App´ for free so everyone is able to read books in this format on a Windows-PC and so I orderd it.

Aveskulov´s treatment of 11.a4 is neither broad nor very deep (he doesn´t cover Nikos´ ...Ra6 from the Quality Chess newsletter) since his conclusion after month of analysis is White is better in all lines.

Instead he recommends to avoid the whole line with a deviation for Black at a very early stage which he analyses on 14 pages. I´m not going to reveal it here since Gambit and Aveskulov for now have decided otherwise but it certainly looks interesting. For now I don´t have the time for a closer look.

So much new analysis, that it cannot be watertight. But it is an interesting try in blitz Wink

I thought that Aveskulov had made a promise to to update this...? At least someone said so on this site some time ago.

Yes Im old enough to get your point. But I thought we were talking about omission. And my point beeing that when the book is "outdated" ( in these 12.Qe2/ 12.a4 variations) in the moment its published, then I think a publisher ( and an author) with respect for himself will make things up and try to sort things out.  I guess thats why Aveskulov promised that update in the first place...?

Fortunately Amazon offers a ´Kindle for PC-App´ for free so everyone is able to read books in this format on a Windows-PC and so I orderd it.

Thx for this information. Might be usful, since I have not recieved an answer from Gambit yet.  Roll Eyes

I also bought the book. And I just sent Gambit an email about this. If its a fact that Aveskulov has updated the Kindle verison, and Gambit holds back the new material to the original book buyers, then its very bad costumer service in my opinion.

Have to wait for an answer. and thx to

The problem with all these sophisticated set-ups against the Benko is that its easy to mess up the move order or find the correct continuation unless you are a super GM. So for the rest of us, Benko is still alive!

Thanks Ameitatonos! I think there is enough practical counterplay now. It is += but perhaps no more. As white I will continue to play 5.b6

Just had a look now Nikos, very interesting. I have a feeling the ...Ra6 line may be decent against 12.a4 also, which is maybe why Carlsen went for the 12.Qe2  move order.

In the analysis you gave I also like 14...Rc8!? for Black instead of 14...Qb7. With ideas ...Nb6 or ...c4. This might have been played in a recent game unless I've mixed the moves up and thats been known to happen.

I intend to have a proper look at this to discover the true implications and differences between the 12.Qe2 line and the 12.a4 line.

Let us start with the Kaufman suggestion which I think is bad. The problem is, that regardless what I suggest, the computer will always add 1 pawn-unit to the white position and say that white is better.

Anyways, his mainline goes:
12. ....Qa5
13. Bd2 Qa6
14. Rhe1 Rfc8
15. Nb5 c4
16. Bc3!

This is dubious for multiple reasons.
1. If black plays Qa5, he should follow up with Rfb8. The move Qa6 is not forced and looks like a simple waste of tempo. It also sets up black for the fork on c7 and that cannot be the best solution.

2. c5-c4 should only be played if it leads to something concrete. If you play this move too early, you allow white to plant a knight on c6 (via d4) or open the b-file for future operations.

My suggested improvements over Kaufmans mainline would be:
13.... Rfb8 14.Nb5 Qd8 (the queen prevents e5 breaks) with Nc7 to follow, not Nb6!
and
15. ... Ne8 with the same idea

His alternative looks dubious to me also:
12.......Qb6
13.Qe2 Rfb8
14. Bd2 Qb3
15. Rhb1 Nb6
16. Ra3 Qc4
17. Qe1 "and white is consolidating his extra pawn".

There are absolutely pointless moves in this line. The whole black play starting with Qb3 looks simply artificial and it discoordinates the black pieces. I am not even talking about his assessment as consolidation of the extra pawn means nothing in the Benko. Like in the Berlin Defence, it doesn't matter to consolidate the advantage, it is all about realizing it and that is impossible if you can't break through.

The "correct" sequence in the Qb6-line would simply be 14...Rfb8 15. Bd2 Ne8 16. Rhb1 Nc7 and Qa6 next. While computers go crazy about the exchange of queens "consolidating the extra pawn", every Benko-player knows that it is thematic. It is the positional "trap" that makes the Benko so attractive.

Going back to the Carlsen game, we notice, that he improved upon Bd2 by playing Nb5 immediately. This doesn't change the black plan as he can go for the exchange by Ne8-c7 and if Bg5 then Kf8. There is still a full game ahead, but black should have the typical Benko compensation as long as he doesn't touch his pawn structure.

In that last line:
12.......Qb6
13.Qe2 Rfb8
14. Bd2 Qb3
15. Rhb1 Nb6
16. Ra3 Qc4
17. Qe1 "and white is consolidating his extra pawn".

I tend to also dis-agree with the assesment, but I do like the 14...Qb3 move and Blacks play up to here.

17...Qb4 and now what? Has White anything better than repaeating moves? He seems in a bit of a tangle to me.

Hi, I'm a 2200 player, play the benko as black and this line (inspired by Kaufman) as white. I've played quite a few games with the line on both sides.

Of course my level (and luckily the level of my opponents) is too low to even think about "a flaw-less" game, but my general impression is that with "normal" benko moves white will often end in a 4 rook or 4 rook + queen endgame (some somehow black-squared bishops tend be exchanged on the long diagonal, the mighty b5 and c4 knights for their colleagues quite often) with the extra pawn but with pawns on b3 and a4 and passive rooks. These endgames are (remarkably!) easier to win with black as it's difficult to make progress and as usual black has  pressure. When the queens come off the board the typical f7-f5 is a regular guest and now e4 can become weak.

All in all i'm not too scared about this line though I still play it as white. I think white must avoid the aforementioned endgames though this means he must be careful in placing the knights on b5 and c4 (my understanding is the exchange of the bishops generally favours white).

Can you give a brief summary, i.e. lines, which lead to nearly unplayable lines to have a starting point for discussion?

Don't think we disagree much Smiley I can't see the benko being busted to a forced win for white or anything, but even an annoying edge which is unamusing for black to play against would deter usage to some extent.

Rather depends how hard it is to play for both sides of course.

i respectfully disagree ... we have only has these multi-cores at this level for three years and since that time many things have changed and are not going to change back

we have not lost solid black systems but almost all of the black gambits have been shown to be tenuous and bordering on unplayability  ... on the other side, we seeing that the time honored classic systems almost all lead to draws and that white does not have any lasting initiatives that lead to winning positions in any main systems unless black makes errors

What I find strange, is that this move has only been played a lot from around 2010 by stronger players.
While the logic of advancing a passed pawn to a4, putting a knight on b5 and then start squeezing is not that hard to find as a plan against the Benko?

This setup has always been one of the main weapons against Benko. Don't know why this exact implementation  has not been used longer.

No wonder so many books/DVD:s were released recently. People are giving up Benko and want to score something. If not points, then some money.

Good book on a bad opening. I've got it.

Ah, I remember the good old days of 1980's and 1990's when Benko was almost a free point for me. They will never come back.

In my database 12.a4 scores 67% - black is practically busted

see also latest CB http://www.chesspublishing.com/content/11/index.htm#ben

When taking into account, that white can play 2.Nf3, and there are also several not so pleasant variations, such as 4.Nf3 , 5.b6  and 10.Rb1 (g3-line) Benkö is not very comfortable to specialize on anymore Sad

And given as "in my opinion strongest" by Pinski.

And to answer the following question:

gwnn wrote on 08/24/12 at 09:37:56:
Is the f3 knight serving a specific purpose there or is it just played because it looks natural?

There is at least one advantage of having the knight on f3 rather than e2: on f3, the knight supports a future e5. On e2, on the other hand, it not only does not support e5, but it also blocks the e-file so that Re1 does not support e5 either. Basically, by playing Nge2, White is basically giving up any e5 plans for the close future. For the same reason, Black can omit Nbd7 more easily against Nge2 than against Nf3.

I should point out an analogy of the position with 12.a4 to the e3-system. Typical plans and concepts can be borrowed from there.

I haven't analysed the Nge2 idea, but it seems plausible based on White's plan. Also, it doesn't give Black a chance to exchange a pair of knights on f3 to gain access to e5 with tempo. On the other hand, it gives White less influence in the centre. Maybe Black should aim for ...e6 to put pressure on White's centre?

Probably a silly thought but what about not playing Nf3 but instead Nge2 intending to 'double knights' on b5 and c3? Is the f3 knight serving a specific purpose there or is it just played because it looks natural?

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. cxb5 a6 5. bxa6 Bxa6 6. Nc3 d6 7. e4 Bxf1 8. Kxf1 g6 9. g3 Bg7 10. Kg2 O-O 11. Nge2 Nbd7 12. a4

Could this be made to work?

Oh, I was mostly defending Bologan Smiley I very much doubt if this line refutes the Benko - in general openings this established just don't get refuted.

The real question is likely how easy/fun a line it is for black to play in practice. It's certainly not trivial if someone as strong as Bologan can get in this much of mess so easily.

Computer evaluations liable to be pretty useless for this of course. A bunch more GM games might give an idea.

Try 16...Qb7 and if 17.Nc4 then Nb6 (otherwise you continue with Nc7). This is a typical idea borrowed from the Benoni. Once a white knight appears on c4, you play either Nb6 or Ne5. On the other hand I have to admit, that black does have certain problems to keep his coordination.

15 .. Kf8 in Carlsen - Bologan vaguely intriguing actually, especially in relation to where this can go wrong for black.

Isn't this rather unpleasant for black? I guess that it isn't totally clear how white is going to improve his position but it's certainly a lot better organised than usual. Obviously, even if this is serious, black can very likely avoid it but there are dangers out there.

And actually 18 Bxe7+ might well explain avoiding Kf8 in a practical game - allowing those sorts of self evidently rather dangerous complications isn't terribly practical.

I agree that it is always dangerous to argue with general observations or typical plans in concrete positions, where every move counts.

The problem with Kaufman's suggestion is that he only considers the computer mainline and tries to refute it. Sometimes the computer mainline looks simply idiotic, because the moves are not connected to a plan. He just ignores that and while it may work in lots of positions, it doesn't work here.

If black plays according to a plan - knowing exactly what the compensation is based upon - he can do much better than by playing the move with the highest computer evaluation.

The plan must be to drive away the knight from b5, because that knight blocks the black rooks. Once the knight is gone, black has access to the weak b4-square. If that plan is losing by force, I am the first to admit, but it doesn't. I like to compare this to the Berlin Wall as mentioned above: As long as the computer evaluation stays at +0.30 forever, I am perfectly ok with it as black, because the true evaluation is 0.00.

Why Kf8 in that Carlsen - Bologan game? A priori it looks like white is likely to get the tempo back when he goes Nd2 - c4 and having the black king on f8 really isn't going to help if/when white plays an e5 sacrifice, or Nxd6, or Bxe7+ etc. Seems quite scary to me Smiley

Qd8 does seem a pretty natural move.

In general I do think it's a tiny bit optimistic to rule this out on general principles in via Rfb8, Ne8 - c7 etc, because doing that will give white some ideas. Maybe they'll not work vs some specific move orders, but there's definetly real potential there.

After Bc3 you proceed with Nc7. If white takes on g7, you take back and play f6. The black position is very resilient.

In my opinion you do have the full Benko compensation, because white cannot do much. Black is not forced to set the board on fire in the Benko only because he is a pawn down. Thanks to the pawn on a4, black has a nice square on b4 for his rook.

P.S.: He does cover Ra6, but the line is as inconclusive as the others.

The objective of 12.a4 doesn't have to be to simplistically promote the a-pawn (as Neric said somewhere), I think it's just the best place for it, since the b-pawn does well on b3, countering Nc4, in fact it's the same set-up as in the fianchetto variation with Rb1, but in my opinion Black has less pressure here.

Oh, and the Ramirez-Leon Hoyos game seems to prove that the combination of Qe2 and a4 is not recommendable against ...Qa5. 18.Rc1 looks like a better move, but that means giving up the a-pawn, after which Black must be fine.

Here I agree, this looks more like a standard Benko. For this reason, I think 12...Qb6 looks better than 12...Qa5.

Neric wrote on 08/20/12 at 09:12:40:

Going back to the Carlsen game, we notice, that he improved upon Bd2 by playing Nb5 immediately. This doesn't change the black plan as he can go for the exchange by Ne8-c7 and if Bg5 then Kf8. There is still a full game ahead, but black should have the typical Benko compensation as long as he doesn't touch his pawn structure.

Again I agree. I was surprised Bologan went for ...Qd8 instead of ...Kf8 in reply to Bg5.

Besides, if Black is ready to play the 12.Re1 Ra6 line, I think 12.a4 Ra6 also looks like a reasonable response for Black (as TN pointed out, this may be why Carlsen chose 12.Qe2 first). Now 13.Re1 takes the game back to 12.Re1 Ra6 territory, while 13.Qe2 Qa8 only seems to serve Black, for several reasons:
- White will find it hard to play Nb5 as a4 will be hanging.
- Moving away from the d-file encourages Black to carry on with the ...e6 plan.
- The queen could end up exposed on the e-file after ...e6, dxe6 fxe6, and a further ...d5, exd5, exd5.

I don't have Kaufman; does he cover 12.a4 Ra6?

On a historical note, Tukmakov in the first (1979) edition of ECO had 12. Qe2 being met by 12...Qa5.

Possibly the latest GM-vs.-GM encounter with that:

I remember reading about the idea of a4 and blocking the queenside long time ago. Because I had trouble playing against the Benko I tried it in a blitz game against an IM who has played it many times. I really got a better position, but blundered in time trouble, which had nothing to do with the opening. Just an anecdote, but I have really liked the plan ever since.

You should look at 12.a4 Ne8 challenging that annoying Knight. Black has done fairly well with this manoeuvre.

FWIW, Gufeld discusses 12.Qe2 (along with 12.h3, 12.Re1 and 12.Qc2 - but not 12.a4). For Black in reply he gives 12...Qb6 as his main response but also gives 12...Qa5 (Pergericht-Delaney, Berlin 1980) and 12...Nb6 (Garcia-Borik, Bochum 1981) as alternatives.

Oh - and Keene & Levy only mention 12.Re1.

In the pgn format, you need to put text comments in these other brackets {}.
If you use only regular parentheses (), the format "expects" a variation (i.e. a legal move) and not just any text.

For example:

or if you wanted to give 14.Bd2 as a variation:

Some of you will recall that the line 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 g6 6.Nc3 Bxa6 7.e4 Bxf1 8.Kxf1 d6 9.g3 Bg7 10.Kg2 0-0 11.Nf3 Nbd7 12.a4 was recommended by Kaufman in 'The Kaufman Repertoire for Black and White'. Since then the moves 12.a4 and 12.Qe2 have become virtually the main line of the Benko, but unfortunately none of my other Benko sources (e.g. Pedersen, Pinski, Alterman) even mention these moves.

Carlsen has played 12.Qe2 twice in the last two months, presumably with the idea of preventing 12.a4 Ra6. Against Bologan he quickly gained an edge:

Instead 12...Qa5 might be a better try; although this was only a blitz game, Black never seemed to be in danger even if his winning chances are minimal in the resulting simplified position.

Returning to 12.a4, the continuation 12...Qb6 13.Qe2 Rfb8 would transpose to Carlsen-Bologan. Instead 12...Qa5 seems more critical, when 13.Ra3 as played in Brunello-Caruana is tempting but I think if Black plays 13...Rfb8 and only plays ...Nb6 when White moves his queen (so that White can't break with e5 so rapidly due to d5 being in need of defence), his position is fine.

The move recommended by Kaufman is 13.Bd2, when at first I thought 13...Rfb8 might be an improvement over the only move given by Kaufman (13...Qa6), but the following game convinced me otherwise:

So it seems that 12.Qe2 Qa5 is okay for Black, but after 12.a4 White obtains an advantage with fairly obvious moves, as White will achieve the ideal Anti-Benko setup of an unchallenged White knight on b5 and pawns on b3 and a4.

Edit: Does anyone know how to fix the PGN problem?
