imo the books are very good, esp. the first one which exposes you to a wealth of strategic themes and ideas.

I haven't done any serious work on the 2nd volume, which has the 'theory', so some of the stuff there may need some update or individual work. Sometimes Sveshnikov may contradict himself (between the 2 tomes) in evaluating a move, but in the end of the books there is a useful index that guides you to all games or comments regarding a specific variation or move.

But if you don't enjoy the positions after 3. e5, I suggest you also have a look at the (French) Two Knights Defence (Fllg above proposed 3. Nc3 which is better in comparison to the French TKD objectively speaking, but only if you plan to follow the main lines).

Sveshnikov claims that studying his Advance French books will yield you an additional 200 ELO points. You might even learn a dangerous weapon against the French.

Just sayin'. Smiley

Thanks for the replies and clarifications.  I was referring to 6. Be2 after Black's Qb6.  I just don't feel like I enjoy the positions after 6. a3.

Even toying with the idea of a Nimzovich system...1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. Nf3 though I suppose that is somewhat suspect.

Regards.

Though it does not prove anything it´s noticeable that in Megabase White only scores 45% after 5... Qb6 6.Be2 compared to 56% after 5... Qb6 6.a3. After 5... Bd7 both moves score 49%.

This might at least indicate that White is more difficult to play here.

I would seriously consider switching to 3.Nc3 unless you really enjoy the positions after 3.e5. You don´t have to follow the absolute main lines otb to get an interesting game.

White still retains his advantage here,

GM Williams disputes this claim. Do you have improvements for White on the stuff he presents after 6.a3 f6 in Attacking Chess?

But 6.Be2 seems to be preferred against 5...Bd7

I like 6...Qb6 and 7...Nh6 for Black. If my research is correct (a very big if) play is equal, but White won't have a quiet positional game.

Having played the French for more than 12 years now I still find 3.Nc3 hardest to meet.

As with all openings, the specific moves matter. Against 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bd7, 6.Be2 is the main line.

Against 5...Qb6, 6.a3 is more popular among masters.

Against Bd7, white has a comfortable way of developing involving Na3-c2. If white tries 6.a3, Black can take advantage of the fact he hasn't moved his Q yet by trying 6...f6! This is the main objection to 6.a3. White still retains his advantage here, but Black is allowed an extra option.

Against 5...Qb6, Black has already committed to a plan of Q-side development. a3 and b4 seeks to embarrass Black's early decision.

Against BOTH, 6.Be2 is perfectly reasonable, as is 6.a3. But 6.Be2 seems to be preferred against 5...Bd7 while 5...Qb6 6.a3 is generally preferred by masters.

Why not the a3-lines?
I was recently reading Sveshnikov's books on the French Advance and a) my liking for 6. a3 increased, b) many of the lines are quite positional in nature (if that helps), c) 6. a3 complements well with Bd3 and some (improved) gambit lines.

Sveshnikov gives less credit to 6. Be2, but I agree with Bibs, that objectively speaking both are equally playable.

Is it worth playing the Advance French as white with Be2 instead of a3?

I don't really want to play a3 lines, but haven't been thrilled with my results with Be2 so considering going to 3. Nc3 instead...or something else?  The french is a pain to play against....

Thanks.

Be2 is fine.
