I don't have Delchev's book with me, but Emms does a fantastic job covering these lines in his Move by Move book.  I recommend you buy it if you play the Taimanov.

From the online extract you can see his selected games, so I don't think there's anything wrong with me telling you that he uses Ermenkov - Nikolov, Mizia 2002, and Adams - Stefansson, Istanbul 2000, as his main illustrative games in this line.

Thx, Eric; I'll buy it.

I've an annoying line, too:

Taimanov with 5. ...Qc7, then 6.f4 a6 7.Nxc6 Qxc6 8.Bd3; theory recommends 8. ...b5 only; during my game I could remember the line and played 8. ...d6 and got a difficult position after Qe2, Bd2, 000;
Can anyone recommend me a model game for Black; I had the safest sicilian by Delchev, but lent it to someone; which game was recommended there and what is, because the book it probably a little outdated, the modern setup?

I want to point out that if Black is worried about White getting his bishop to g5, what about 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Nc3 Qc7 6. Be2 a6 7. 0-0 Nf6 8. Bg5?  This must be better than 8.a4 first.  And then there's the line 8.Kh1 Bb4 9.Bg5, which is also probably OK for Black but clearly a better try for White than 8.a4 Bb4 9.Bg5 would be.

Anyhow after 8.Bg5 I always just go 8...Be7, and after 8.Kh1 I play 8...Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bc5.  The only two times that I've had 8.a3 played against me, I've gone for 8...Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bd6 10.Kh1 Be5.  Clearly 8.a4 must be the worst of these waiting moves, after which all of those ways of developing for Black are playable.

I get this line in blitz sometimes. 8...Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bd6 10. Kh1 Be5 11. Qd3 b6 12. f4 Bxc3 13. bxc3 Bb7 14. Bf3 d5 looks ok for Black.

Maybe 8.-Bb4 9.Bg5 Qd6!? works too.

Obviously white is willing to tranpose to Che, but of course it is theoretically ok.

I enjoy the black side of the Schevenigen transposition. I'm also of the opinion he doesn't have anything to fear in that particular variation. Then again, I also support black's cause in 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Qc7 6.Be3 a6 7.Be2 Nf6 8.0-0 Be7 9.f4 d6, which is just a pure Schevenigen. I haven't seen anything indicating a white advantage.

So what's the problem?

Transposing to Scheveningen is a little co-operative though theoretically fine.

Meh. Playing the Schevenigen and allowing the Keres Attack is more cooperative than this particular variation.

To each his own, I suppose.

8...Bb4 9.Bg5 good for White on what grounds?  You can even just play 9...Be7--the Bishop doesn't want to be on g5 there.  But 9...Ne5 and 9...h6 both look fine to me.

I think it's up to you to convince me that I should be at all worried about 8...Bb4 9.Bg5; I don't see it.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Nc3 Qc7 6. Be2 a6 7. a4 Nf6 8. O-O

This is rare but interesting:

8.-Bb4 9.Bg5 seems good to white.

8.-Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bd6 is interesting

8.-Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bc5 10.Qd3 h5!?/b6

best seems going to Scheveningen: 8.-Be7

Any ideas?
