The basic idea was to make it easier for the members to find the topics that interest them, and to avoid starting new threads when old ones already existed on the same subject.
Personally speaking, everyday I read the 10 or 15 most recent posts (http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?action=recenttopics;display=10) to see what's 'trending', and click on the threads that interest me the most, so it hasn't made much difference to me, one way or the other.

I don't understand the reason for all these sub-fora. If there was massive traffic, I could understand it, but as things stand, I have the feeling that this Balkanisation suppresses discussion, if anything.

For example, in the old days, I might have clicked on the Nimzo and Benoni forum and be moved to comment on a Tango post, but now, I might never specifically click on the Tango subforum and see the post in the first instance.

I might be completely off-base here; maybe traffic numbers tell the completely opposite story. But my impression is that this fragmentation has been to the clear detriment of the forum.

* * * * * * * *

A typical ratio between square size and piece size is
0.8 to 1. The above pieces are 0.67 to 1.

Tony, try changing lines 1009, 604 and 599 in http://www.chesspub.com/yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default.css

to read as follows, changes are highlighted in green:

table.pad_4px td, .padd_4px { padding: 0; }

.message table td {
    border: none;
}

.message table {
    width: auto;
    margin-left: 1em;
    border: 4px solid #000;
}

That yields a 0.77 to 1 ratio.

To change pieces you could start by picking something here:

Yes, it just alters the message text size, I can change other things too if necessary, but I guess this is the important one.

Yes, me, too, but it's good to have the choice.

There is a Mod I can add which gives users the option of what size they want, but it would be quite a bit of hassle adding it (!) The good news is that it will be integrated into the next major version. In the meantime you can try changing the font you use in your browser, and I will see if I can add a bigger template.

I'm going to update the Forum again, probably tonight (GMT). It's just a small upgrade, mostly bug fixes, so it shouldn't take too long, and shouldn't make any cosmetic difference.

I suppose PNG would be best as it is a lossless image compression format - we just need to pick a nice chess piece design from somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas?

It should be easy to change the pieces, they are just GIF files, maybe we could make them bigger or use another image format?

The pixelated pieces aren't here.

The size of the pieces is a matter of taste. As you are a publisher you surely remark things I don't see. I'm not the visual perception type.

This is not against finding something better.  Couldn't find an upload service without giving my email@, Else I would post the screenshot here.

It's not about the thicker lines between files h and g and ranks 2 and 3. That happened to the jpg only via the upload / scaling to the clout. As I explained above, what I didn't like were the pixelated pieces and the oversized squares, in relation to the pieces.

Maybe "dimension" is the key word. The FEN is displayed much larger on my screen than the PGN. I thought it was completely new (and worse) after the change.

I haven't changed them, but maybe there is some html on the page that it altering them, or their relative dimensions. Can anyone post a screen capture where this is obvious?

There is a work-around with the PGN thingy:

This is not a complaint, and I do like the new format. Just putting it out there just in case there is another "d'uh!" like me.
I did encounter a slight problem of my own making.
I started using feedly to organise my blogs and forum reading/browsing. I set ChessPub to feedly to inform when there are new posts. It worked well until the recent structural change (which is great, I did say that already, right?!). I did noticed in the past few months that I was not getting a lot of new posts on ChessPubs. I thought perhaps it was "dying out" …… with many of the "old" chesspubbers missing (or RIP). Today I twigged onto the fact that feedly does not capture the new posts in the sub forums which has been dedicatedly created by Tony et al (thanks!!).
sigh! back to the drawing board and read he forums one by one.
On the plus side, just discovered the new tools one can use on reading the forum …… cool as!

I can see the idea but I really preferred the old way. Maybe a review depending on post count/traffic would be worth it because some sub forums are surely not required.

Just my opinion!!

Maybe you have to translate: "Es Recht zu machen jedermann, ist eine Kunst, die keiner kann." (J.P. Hebel) It's the end of a story. Father and son go to the market with a donkey. The father puts the son on the donkey's back. A man comes against and says: What a bad young chap. Let's his father walk. The son starts walking, the father starts riding. Another man: What a shame. The strong man let's his child walk. They both ride. The third man: The poor animal. Two strong humans can't walk! Father and son enter the market carrying the donkey.

The forum change is G R E A T.

Yup. Renaming the original post doesn't rename the posts that were already made, but it will rename all future posts in that thread. So, the person originating a thread can also rename it.

Hm, weird. Yes, I use Chrome, but it has worked fine before. I'll try to see if I can find what has changed. Thanks for the answers!

It worked after changing my Time format, thanks. Maybe I had it set to a time format that got removed by some forum update.

In the options screen, it didn't show anything after "Your displayed time:" either, but after changing the time format it did. Even when I then set it back to what seemed to be my original setting (the first one). That's behavior I would expect if I didn't have it set at all, or if my setting wasn't known anymore.

Also the text above quotes changes from "Scarblac wrote yesterday at 14:32:38:" to "Quote:"

Ctrl-F5 doesn't help. Disabling NoScript, Ghostery and AdBlock also doesn't help.

I can assure you the date/time information is definitely still there, Smiley please try clearing your browser cache (F5 or Ctrl + F5) as it seems your browser is hoarding old images and data.
If that doesn't work you can try changing your date form in your User CP preferences.

Is there some way to fix this, or are all the old links now defunct?

Ah, interesting, it's not the new format that is causing the problem, I think it's the fact that I changed the path from http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl to http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl to make it more difficult for spammers to find the Forum.
So, if you change 'yabb2' to 'chess' in the link it works normally.
Maybe I should put the 'yabb2' to 'chess' redirect back on, although it rather defeats the object. Changing all the old links seems a bit drastic. Undecided
Any thoughts?

The new format has a problem. The old addresses that are used in countless threads to reference other threads no longer work.

Here's an example:
Fllg wrote on 01/26/14 at 11:16:54:
According to Lysyj & Ovetchkin in "The Open Games for Black" from 2012 after 7.0-0 Nge7 "White will be forced to fight for equality" while they consider 7.Qb3 to be "White´s best move" and end their analysis with equality.

Though this book is written for the black side I think anyone interested in the Evans should consult it.

There has also been an interesting discussion on Chesspub in this thread: http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1306923212/0

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1306923212/0 ; now creates a 404 error.

Is there some way to fix this, or are all the old links now defunct?

Site location  http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl

Are these locations correct?

No! The 2nd one is right, the first one should be similar:
http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?action=RSSrecent I suppose.
There is another thread about this change (/yabb2 to /chess) here.

Looks OK to me, but when I validate it I see there might be a potential problem with the PGN game code on your RSS feed, if one of the posts happens to contain a game.

It depends which opening! Wink
Anyway, it is only a quick search, and looks in all the sections. For a deeper search with more options (a particular section, for instance, or a longer period) there is always the main search.

Thanks, I've added a few more sub-boards for you! Wink
Hopefully the Forum's organisation will be much better soon, and new subscribers will stop posting new threads when they can post on appropriate old ones instead. Roll Eyes

Ah, I've just got an answer from the YaBB expert and she asks which Date/Time Format you are using in your User Cp ('Options')?
GeneM too?

THanks Tony for chasing this up. I changed my date format and it worked. I think the previous date format I chose is no longer available in the new template and hence the date/time could not be displayed.

I'll try to propose list tomorrow or day after tomorrow ... need time, to choose (according to statistics , books usage ...)

What  will stay in the main thread are to be sure the "C00-C19" posts, general topics (books, authors, players,...)

For pictures : I would like "static GIF" (not animated) or better SVG file (Scalable Vector Graphics picture), with some key-squares with pieces/arrows . They can be produced with chess software and drawing software . For example: Exchange, four squares drawn with white pawns (d4,e4) and black pawns (e6,d5) and arrow from e4 to d5. French : Effel's tower or "Marianne" statue

Yes, that seems to be a problem with the icons, too. It's easy to alter that, but what I really wanted to know is the Forum's opinion of having photos there instead of the board icons? Undecided
Maybe we should have some board specific icons instead? Smiley

It looks a bit out of place to me, as the authors on chesspublishing are rarely active in their sections on chesspub...
Maybe some kind of animated gifs of diagrams showing the first few moves in the openings covered in each section?

For the "move menu" I used one trick, because every time I move..I have to go the page N where the move has been done...at the end...I copied the URL and pasted it after the move.

Now, "your move ?"  Smiley (what's next ?)

I can say for my browser (Firefox 12.0 on Fedora 14..yes, I know old linux..but I want that operating system  Smiley )...

Viktor's picture display (1.e4 e5 main page)  is not good idea  Cry just as it's included mainly because NOT resizable picture (width and height is always same in pixels when resizing window)....and that's making overlay : text over picture.

Try to improve: (I don't know how to do because I am old HTML coding..not practicing newYabb forums,css...)...I would try some new embedding (table? forbid resizable parts of window using frame ?..)

I have access to 3 different computers with a number of browsers running on each, and they all look perfect to me, no problems at all. Presumably those who wrote the software have also tested it on a range of browsers (inc. mobiles).
If anyone has real problems seeing the site then please tell me what those problems are exactly, which browser/OS you are using, whether you have an unusual setup in some way, and maybe send a screenshot, and I will get in touch with the YaBB guys and try to sort it out. Smiley

No, It's been finished for a while, it was only in Maintenance Mode a few hours, but then I moved to another server just to complicate matters.  Roll Eyes
I like the look myself, but as soon as I can get hold of some alternative templates I will add them for those who don't like it.

I think there must be a way for you to view the page with different browsers to see how really bad it is. Maybe this will help:

Is this latest update still a work in progress? It's been a few days since the site went down and came back up with an "update". Since the update the site looks all jumbled and is difficult to read and/or use.  Shocked  Angry  Cry

I am using the Chrome browser on a Windows machine.

It depends which opening! Wink
Anyway, it is only a quick search, and looks in all the sections. For a deeper search with more options (a particular section, for instance, or a longer period) there is always the main search.

Maybe there is some invalid HTML syntax, and IE is being unforgiving?

When you go to the Board Index, right towards the bottom left, under 'Forum Statistics' there should be a drop-down list 'View the ...' where you can choose the number of posts.

I've just been playing with the settings, the Forum is now set to UK time (I hope) and the time is right on my version, but some of the recent posts' times seems to have been messed up! Roll Eyes

I'm glad you like it, hopefully the sub-boards will be a big organisational help ... as soon as I get them all done!

It looks Ok to me, but we are probably not in exactly the same time zone! Try changing this in your User CP.

There seem to be quite a few newly discovered bugs in the Forum software (which is inevitable, really, as the most intensive testing comes from actual use), and I suppose there will be some fixes coming soon.
I have mentioned some of our problems, some have been fixed already, but if anyone notices anything else please post here! Wink

OK. I have hacked at our proprietary code a bit, and removed the letters and number around the board. I think it looks better, at least it should suffice until someone explains to me how to get them back without the CSS mess! Roll Eyes

OK, thanks guys, it does indeed look like a problem with the server ... which I am going to change today anyway! Smiley Let's see if that sorts the problem out.

It doesn't look like it is a browser problem, then, as I haven't had any problems with MSIE 11 or the old version 8 (in XP).
Can you try going to http://www.yabbforum.com/cgi-bin/community/YaBB.pl to see if you experience the same problem there, too?

I can see the date and time on that forum.

I agree the chesspub.com datetime absence problem is not the browser's fault: the datetime info simply is not sent to MS IE from the chesspub.com server.
Perhaps something in the header of the GET request sent by IE to the chesspub.com server is being checked by the server logic in buggy logic?

It will always show datetime info, the Forum wouldn't work otherwise.

Someone else mentioned they had lost this, it could be OS or browser related. I can check it out if you give some more information.

Partial Diagnosis:

With INTERNET EXPLORER browser --- I cannot see the datetime or the Preview button.

But with FIREFOX browser I can see them.

That was me and in Safari, there is no date time which is really annoying as I cannot tell the latest posts from this of some time ago. As mentioned, the field "Posted on" has no info.

Except that the preview function still exists, and is actually better now. Before I posted that, I might have run a ctrl+f on the posting screen to ensure I wasn't going to look silly.

Yeah, I see.

It is stupid to remove this feature. This board is getting slower and slower anyway.

Easy, yes I suppose so, but also time-consuming. I usually click on all the threads I want to move and then 'move', click on the drop-down box, and then 'go', but obviously there are two major limiting factors: firstly the size of the page (there might be only one thread to move each page), and secondly, the server, which seems to take a while to move several thread at the same time (and sometimes only moves some of them!)
There is no simpler way, as far as I can see, no 'search and move', say, but that is probably just as well as picking the right threads to move can also prove tricky (those new balloons are very helpful, though).

That's true, but it seems odd to start a new section for just a few threads, what if we simply 'unstuck' some of them instead? Certainly the older ones could be 'archived'?! Undecided
Most sub-boards seem fairly obvious, but I would certainly welcome good suggestions for sub-dividing the General and Computer sections.

Unstucking or sub-boarding could certainly work too, I just assumed that the moderator wants those threads to be easy to find at one place...

Those threads can definitely be unstuck or archived.  If you want to preserve a list of the winners for posterity, then create a single thread with one message in it that lists each winner year by year.  Could even lock the thread and then just update it once per year.

You'll have to use your judgement, but yes 4 d3 should be a Berlin, and Anti-Marshalls should go in the Marshall section (the ECO codes on the sub-board are probably the best guide).

It's going to be arbitrary whichever you choose. ECO classification is an approach, but that's going to fail where theory and practice have move on and the code no longer discriminates between popular but different lines.

A small suggestion as the forum is being tidied up anyway: in General Chess isn't it time to move the Book of the Year polls to their own section? The number of sticky threads or nowadays "Important Topics" seem to fill almost half the space of the section...

I've always found this extremely useful, especially as a way of checking that I've not messed up horribly in my attempts to quote what someone else has posted. Has this option gone for good? If it can be reinstated without too much trouble, I'd be very happy to have it back!

There is a Preview button at the top left (just underneath 'Post reply') as I am writing this reply, don't you have it? Maybe it used to be beside 'Post Message' and has moved, I don't know?!

As one may have noticed I've started adding sub-boards here and there, and moving the threads over. This is going to be fairly long- I've already moved 50 (!) pages full of them, but there are obviously a lot more to do. Shocked
Any help from Moderators would be much appreciated, I've started at the beginning so you could either move threads from the end of the main boards, or see the date for the last thread I've moved and start there.
I recommend you switch the balloons on so you can immediately see how the first post starts if you have any doubt over the subject. Cool
Remember to precise the destination (!) in the drop-down box below, and please clear up the 'Moved to' posts after you.
Thanks! Smiley

Hello Tony,
Can you update the menu ?
It is on the bar "Lock/Unlock Sticky Hide..." with text field default "-Checkpub.com Discussion"
I use that bar to move threads
Below ChesspubOpenings, you have no line with "French " but directly Winawer-Tarrasch-Advance
I would prefer to have two lists proposed by the field: first one for sub-boards in the same main board and second list for other sub-boards (1.e4 e5, ...)

No, I don't think I have any control over that, but I agree it would be easier to move the threads if we had less options - for Flank, say, it's necessary to scroll down the list each time to get to the sub-boards. Angry

Hello Tony,
Can you update the menu ?
It is on the bar "Lock/Unlock Sticky Hide..." with text field default "-Checkpub.com Discussion"
I use that bar to move threads
Below ChesspubOpenings, you have no line with "French " but directly Winawer-Tarrasch-Advance
I would prefer to have two lists proposed by the field: first one for sub-boards in the same main board and second list for other sub-boards (1.e4 e5, ...)

I keep checking out sections but it doesn't seem that the "already viewed" button (icon?) is working.  I've even tried viewing every thread and it still says there is something new.

This happens to me as well on Chrome, but only in specific sections it seems - even weirder!  Undecided

Did you try looking at the "sub-boards"?  This worked for me, although it did try and tell me I hadn't looked at a post that I wrote!

I hadn't noticed the separate thread on the King's Gambit.  After I looked at it the board was updated. Smiley

Hmm, it works for me. Have you tried logging out and then logging back in again? Otherwise it might be a cookie problem, I suppose. Undecided

I can make a temporary fix (until someone can suggest a permanent change?! Undecided) that removes the numbers and letters down the side (and also the arrow)

+1 for this temporary fix

Not so nice display for diagram :

Yes, as you point out this is a CSS problem which is altering the Table dimensions of the numbers and letters around the board. I'm trying to track it down at the moment, but if there are any CSS experts out there with suggestions ... ? Undecided

I can make a temporary fix (until someone can suggest a permanent change?! Undecided) that removes the numbers and letters down the side (and also the arrow) so there is just the board and pieces, which will look neater. Any views on this?

I cannot see the date and the of each individual post once I logged in. Does anyone else have the problem?

I hadn't noticed it on mine, have you tried refreshing the page a few times?

Tried all that and still not date stamp. It is useful info especially when someone revives an old thread.

I'd be glad to do some sorting of posts in the e4 e5 and d4 d5 forums.

OK, good, I'll add a couple of sub-boards, any preferences?

Also, how do I specify my time zone?  I can't see the option in my User CP.

I've just added the option to choose your time zone. Wink

Btw, the problematic balloons on the index page - what purpose do they serve??

Agreed, it's redundant info, so I've removed them. Wink

I think there is a field "posted on" but it is not being filled at the moment. You can see the field when you are typing a reply and in the topic summary below the reply box.
PS I just noticed that on the main page, there is also no date and time to the post in the "Last Post" column.
