Avrukh's recommendation against it is sharp, but white isn't lacking for appreciably quieter options that also try for an advantage, ie: 6.0-0 Nc6 7.Bg5 among others.

The reality is that against the Catalan black must face the reality that white often has multiple paths requiring precise knowledge to tame.

Thanks for sharing these videos, I've been using Tiviakov's recommendation but always found it quite passive, this a6 stuff looks right up my street though.

Not that it's theoretically a problem at all, but White can always play 4...dxc4 5.Qa4+.  White nearly always has a way of keeping things pretty calm if he wants to.

As long as I know the most unbalanced line in the Catalan is this one (a correspondence game of mine):



So black has to build a repertoire based on 4. ... dxc4 5. Bg2 a6 6. O-O Nc6 7. Nc3 Rb8 if he wants to play sharp stuff, just as JEH said already.

Facing the Catalan with Black I wonder what you recommend to play to get the sharpest and most unbalancing positions.
