One of my possible sources will be old games played during these centuries. In the Mega Database 2012, I can found around 200 games played until Napoleon's time, but I'm sure that we got more games than that (for example, in this database, we can found only the first game from the well-known book "Analyse du jeu des Echecs" writen by Philidor in 1749, the other ones are missing).

Take a look at http://www.gambitchess.com/antiques.htm to start off with. Two other sources I use when writing articles is http://www.chessarch.com/ and google books.
Good luck.

Shocked

I'm reminded again of something Short wrote recently, approximately "The biggest fallacy in chess is the quasi-religious belief in the primacy of the opening."

Don't know about databases, but I wonder if the Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games (covering 1485-1866) would be of any use.

Looking for an old games database

Hi everyone !

I'm currently starting to work on a master's degree (in french) on the subject "Evolution, practice and perception of the game of chess in France from the late 15th century to the beginning of the 19th century".

Is it existing one or more databases featuring these games played in the period 1480-1815 (approximately) ? Do you know where i can found them ?

Thank you for your answers. I apologize, I'm french and my english isn't that perfect. Wink
