I would never have signed up for chesspublishing years ago if the updates weren't available in pgn Smiley you cannot supply a product in a proprietary form only.

No, I quite agree, which is why we have always published the games and opening guides in PGN form. It would be nice to have real playable eBooks in PGN form, too, but until someone creates suitable software we will probably have to stick to making ChessBase ones.

The problems were with the actual moves in the ebooks.  For example, instead of Bd3 there is an unusual character instead of the B.

This does sound like a font problem, they all look fine on my copy of CB12.

Yes, I would like to, but unfortunately the reaction to the one PGN eBook has been precisely zero! Sad

Yep! - pgn is universal and open
Perhaps I can get a discount renewing my gold membership as I don't have access to all of Chesspublishing (no chessbase on macs...)?  Grin

It seems like it could be a very nice program. The database limit and the lack of support for CBH-files (which I have a lot of) is a problem, but I might give it a try anyway.

Well, I have a lot of playable e-books from Everyman, quite a few CB-videos, and all my analysis in CBH-files.

I wanted to try the Hiarcs explorer, but there doesn't seem to be a trial version available. $99 is not exactly a small fraction of the price for Chessbase 12...

I think (maybe Harvey will comment?) that with the next version Mark is planning to remove the database limit.

I don't have the cbh problem as I have done my best over the years to maintain everything in pgn as I have discovered no reason at all to have CBH.

Yes the limit will be increased. I have managed to split my big cbh database into a few pgn databases. You can easily fit all human games with elo  > 2400 into one db. Another way is to make a db with say all 1. e4 games in it.

I did have a problem where the piece symbols (such as bishop and knights) show up as weird characters.

On the eBooks? If so, in the games or in the text?

CB12 seems to be running slower than I expected

Hmm, mine too.

I made the plunge and have bought and installed CB12.  I had a few installation problems but seem to have most things working today.  The ChessPublishing ebooks loaded nicely and it's definitely much better than viewing the pdf version.  I did have a problem where the piece symbols (such as bishop and knights) show up as weird characters.  I'm sure that will turn out to be a simple fix of downloading the correct font set.  Unless it is my imagination, CB12 seems to be running slower than I expected - but I need to give it a bit more time to evaluate.  No response yet from ChessBase support - but I'll certainly give them the benefit of the doubt on that since it is the holidays.

Well, I'm a little bit addicted to that CB program..  Embarrassed
There's no better program for working with databases, imho.

You should try Hiarcs explorer... aside from being cheaper, easier to use and better thought out... its much more "reliable." It does have a single major drawback at the moment which is that is has a database limit of I believe 1.5 million games.... but seriously once you see the speed at which you can flick through opening explorers... and the better layout of player explorers... just watch your preparation time be cut in half.
