It's still so buggy?
I bought CB 11 and considered briefly an upgrade - hoping for a stable version... no real need of new features; but if I am not missing something, the upgrade price from CB 11 to 12 ( http://chessbase-shop.com/en/products/chessbase12_upgrade_engl ) is the same as CB 12 Download version ( http://chessbase-shop.com/en/products/chessbase12_download ) - 99€ ?  Huh
imho a fair price for the old users should be something like 49€  Roll Eyes

This really sucks. I bought ChessBase 12 and it's really buggy even after the last updates. Sometimes the variations show up, sometimes they don't. Sometimes the text is correctly aligned, sometimes it doesn't. Oh, well, shame on me for spending over a $100 for a cheesy program.

Well, I have CheeseBase 11 and there's not an option to delete all color commentary. there's an option to delete all commentary but not just all the color commentary. Dunno if that makes any sense.

In the old Chessbase, you could go to "Insert" and go down to "Delete all commentary" or type "Shift Cntrl Y".

Is there a way to delete all color commentary at once?

And in "customize" are there tons of shortcuts?

TIA!

I actually upgraded to 12 from 10 and am very happy with it. I immediately updated the software, and I haven't had a single problem so far. My CB10 bugged out once or twice a week.

I like the new version and the new features. Not a huge upgrade, but it was worth it for me.

Are there any ChessBase 10 starter kits available anywhere from a reliable source?  All the reviews I have read on the database versions seem to indicate that this may have been the most stable.  The problems with this 12 version, from what I am reading, is that it is pretty buggy.  I have the old 8 version, but it is pretty out-of-date.  The descriptions of the problems with version 11 appear even more negative than for 12.
Too bad the ChessBase products are so bloody expensive.

Found out where it is hidden. There is a option on the misc tab in options for making them visible.

I was excited about the new features in ChessBase 12 but held off for a while because of the problems that people were reporting with the shipping version. I now have it and have updated to version 5 online, and have had almost no problems (certainly no more than with ChessBase 11). So if anyone was delaying their purchase for the same reason, my experience is that the program is pretty stable now. Just be sure to do the online update.

My fritz trainer dvd's don't play in chessbase 12 anymore after last update!!
In Chessbase 11 they do!

To answer my own problem: I reinstalled my laptop cause more went wrong like Windows 8 tiles not working anymore.
Probably it strangely enough had something to do with my virusscanner. Now Chessbase 12 seems to work fine Smiley

I had been experiencing an issue with doing database maintenance on CB12.  I was receiving an error message when I tried to pack a database to remove deleted games.  I reported this to CB support and they addressed it in the most recent program update which I downloaded this past week (version 5 I believe.)  I am pleased to report that the problem is fixed and everything works correctly.

Yes, I updated to this version, too. And everything is working fine.
So, maybe you are using Chessbase 12 with different language than English and while updating, the language file that responds for the proper view of your software just didn't updated as it should.  Undecided

You're right.
I already set it back to english instead of dutch. Just after my message and it works fine that way. But thanks anyway, you're completely right!  Smiley

The depth algorithms of Rybka and Houdini are way too different, so we can't make general conclusions about their real depth values. Nevertheless, it's beyond doubt that the Houdini engine is better and faster..  Wink

As of SP4, copying games is still buggy.  I clipped a few games to the clipboard and then tried to copy them to a database, and I got a (non-fatal) error.  Trying to fix game order also causes an error.  In both cases integrity check fixes whatever problems are caused.

The access to cloud engines is pretty neat.  I will say, however, that the Rybka Cluster is dramatically overpriced.  The fastest Houdini engines are 1/8th the cost of the Rybka Cluster and hit deeper depths faster.

One annoying feature is that when I try to save a game from the board window into "My Repertoire" database, CB does not seem to correctly save the header information.  So far I have had to manually correct each game header.

I also notice a possible problem when entering games manually for your repertoire database.   If I right click on the board of a game that I enter manually with annotations and select "Add to Repertoire..." CB does not save the annotations unless I have already saved the game separately.  I was assuming when I used "Add to Repertoire..." CB would automatically save all the content I have typed to the repertoire database and not exclude the annotations.

Edit: Actually there may have been a naming problem and an older file (with less games) was being downloaded by mistake, please try now.

Yes, that corrected the problem with the Nimzo ebook.  Thank you for addressing it so quickly!

Tony, it turns out that the problem is isolated to the Nimzo Indian ebook.  The others appear fine (at least all that I have checked.)  I tried downloading and replacing the previous version of the Nimzo ebook but unfortunately that did not solve the problem and the same issues are present where the piece images in the notation are replaced by odd characters.

No, I quite agree, which is why we have always published the games and opening guides in PGN form. It would be nice to have real playable eBooks in PGN form, too, but until someone creates suitable software we will probably have to stick to making ChessBase ones.

It seems like it could be a very nice program. The database limit and the lack of support for CBH-files (which I have a lot of) is a problem, but I might give it a try anyway.

Well, I have a lot of playable e-books from Everyman, quite a few CB-videos, and all my analysis in CBH-files.

I wanted to try the Hiarcs explorer, but there doesn't seem to be a trial version available. $99 is not exactly a small fraction of the price for Chessbase 12...

I think (maybe Harvey will comment?) that with the next version Mark is planning to remove the database limit.

I don't have the cbh problem as I have done my best over the years to maintain everything in pgn as I have discovered no reason at all to have CBH.

Yes the limit will be increased. I have managed to split my big cbh database into a few pgn databases. You can easily fit all human games with elo  > 2400 into one db. Another way is to make a db with say all 1. e4 games in it.

I made the plunge and have bought and installed CB12.  I had a few installation problems but seem to have most things working today.  The ChessPublishing ebooks loaded nicely and it's definitely much better than viewing the pdf version.  I did have a problem where the piece symbols (such as bishop and knights) show up as weird characters.  I'm sure that will turn out to be a simple fix of downloading the correct font set.  Unless it is my imagination, CB12 seems to be running slower than I expected - but I need to give it a bit more time to evaluate.  No response yet from ChessBase support - but I'll certainly give them the benefit of the doubt on that since it is the holidays.

Yes, I would like to, but unfortunately the reaction to the one PGN eBook has been precisely zero! Sad

I think (maybe Harvey will comment?) that with the next version Mark is planning to remove the database limit.

I don't have the cbh problem as I have done my best over the years to maintain everything in pgn as I have discovered no reason at all to have CBH.

It seems like it could be a very nice program. The database limit and the lack of support for CBH-files (which I have a lot of) is a problem, but I might give it a try anyway.

There's no better program for working with databases, imho.

You should try Hiarcs explorer... aside from being cheaper, easier to use and better thought out... its much more "reliable." It does have a single major drawback at the moment which is that is has a database limit of I believe 1.5 million games.... but seriously once you see the speed at which you can flick through opening explorers... and the better layout of player explorers... just watch your preparation time be cut in half.

Yes, these functions seem by far the most interesting, although I often wonder who really needs such analysing power? As a professional I need a strong machine to help writing books/annotating games for articles, and also when preparing something new for a very strong GM opponent ... but even I don't need this very often!

Well, I never experienced crashes with CB12.
It's true that I use this program only to work with my databases and this may be the only reason for this.
By the way, if someone uses two different versions of CB on one computer can expect such behaviour from the program we talk about. Both versions of CB may use some common files and therefore the user may experience some crashes.
I never install two versions of a program on one computer. For example, I have my CB11 on my PC, while CB12 happily lives on my laptop. And they both work as expected.
Anyway, I'm not telling that this is the only reason for a CB program can crash. No, not at all! Some users say that they never buy new programs right after their release. They usually wait for three to six months after the release and then buy it (obviously, when some updates were installed).
It's not an unique situation. ChessOK recently released their new version of the mighty program called Aquarium. Some users experienced problems with it, reported back.. And now this company is preparing its official update, soon to be released. As for Chessbase, we know that they did it twice with CB12 already.  Roll Eyes
And now let me say what I see, good or bad, with this CB12!
Working with databases now is slower than in CB11 (but better, they say from ChessBase). It's obvious that they prepared their new product for high-end processors like Intel 7's and greater values of RAM. It's a matter of politics these days. Higher program requirements raise the new computers sales, you know.. So, buy a new PC in order to use the new program!  Roll Eyes
And now the goodies:
"Let's check", "Cloud analysis" and "Deep position analysis" are amongst the good things you can acquire with this CB12, thus not needing the Fritz 13 GUI at all.  Smiley

I've had numerous crashes. It usually happens when I try to access the Reference database via the Reference tab in the game window. But there are many other times the program stops working or almost freezes. Like when the screen saver goes on while I have an engine running. Annoying program.

I've only had two crashes so far, one of them when I tried to create a PGN file, and the other when copying games, but I guess they will sort these problems out pretty soon.
For serious work I still use a stable 2009 version of CB10.

I have used older versions of Chessbase 7 and also Chessbase Light Premium. The older software seems plagued by crashes and bugs, particuarly while editing games, which is the only reason I purchased it.

Ah, this sounds like an improvement I would appreciate because it could save me some time. I have often wanted to search the reference database and another base. The rest I am not sure I need. I'll likely stick to CB11 for a while anyway.

One small improvement is that you can now change the 'Reference database' temporarily 'on the fly' - this is like changing the 'Source' in Hiarcs Explorer (although not as good - and you can't use PGN databases).
Anyway, this could be a useful addition for the ChessPub playable eBooks - set it to reference itself.

It seems you've entered in the so called "cloud analysis". I'm not experienced at it, but what I tried was the "deep analysis".
Well, I expected much, much more. What I mean?
No options (or I don't know where they are), just some iterations like we're in the "slow course"...and only 4 to 5 plys in 4 possible variations in return.  Huh
What I expected? Just an improved version of, say, Fritz 13's deep analysis option. Not much, I suppose.  Roll Eyes

I guess it's natural to moan about the things we don't like when we get a new version, but what about the big new improvements? Undecided
I tried the deep position analysis yesterday, and it looked interesting: 3 different engines somehow sharing the analysis, anyone else try this?

Yes, I didn't want to post again and seem overly obsessive about this Smiley but the great truth has dawned on me that although there is now very little difference between teak and maple they are supposed to be different designs i.e. teak is the new maple 2.  I suppose the old teak was thought to be too austere for 'modern' tastes and another brighter tone was required. The downside is that board designs now lack consistency  between the two current products CB12 and Fritz 13, obviously this is only important if you have a particular liking for the 'old' teak design as I have.

Hello Vass,
I only found this out recently but, when you are clicking on the square say f3, if you right click at the same time i.e. while holding down the left button, the squares with the pieces that can move there are sequentially highlighted.  When the right piece is highlighted just release the left button, (see Enter Moves in Help Index).

I wish you good luck then! You'll need it..
It seems to me Chessbase release their products according to the "modern" approach today - first release, users test it, then updates are coming..
I, for one, still wonder where to change the 'inputting moves' option from 'aggressive' to 'normal'..
This thing really annoys me.. You know, on a new board after inputting 1.e4 e5 and then clicking on the f3-square...the knight is springing from g1 on f3 immediately.. (Well, that was fast!  Grin) What if I prefer this knight first to ask me before springing? Maybe I just wanted to play f2-f3, after all..  Huh

Why don't you try Ctrl+Alt+O (set the main program options), then just go to the "Design" tab, press the "Board Design" button and click on the "Colour schemes" rollbar? Then the second option from the drop down menu (under "Maple") is maybe what you are searching for. ...I hope!

Thanks for the welcome and prompt reply Vass.  You weren't to know but I've had Chessbase since CB8 and am pretty familiar with the set-up controls.  I've tried to get the teak via both the Ctrl+Alt+O and the Board\Square route. I can get all the other designs but when I select teak I get maple, i.e. a second maple.   I haven't tried a re-install yet but I have done a repair from the CB12 CD, all to no effect.  I've put in a query to Chessbase and will wait  to see what they have to say.  When I have a moment (it's an irritant not a big issue) I will try a registry clean-up on my Dell XPS and then possibly a re-install of CB12.

Hello everyone, this is my first post after just joining the forum.
I have just purchased and installed Chessbase 12 and have come across a small but irritating problem.  I find that I cannot load the teak board squares, my favourite board design.  These were still available in Chessbase 11 when I had that program installed alongside CB12 and also available in my copy of Fritz 13.  I have activated the program and updated to the latest version (update 4) on the server, but still no teak!
Anyone else have the same issue?

I've just tried to update CB12 and discovered that my version was 1 and the latest is 4 - I'm surprised that they don't update their download so that it is always the latest version.
Anyway, hopefully I can copies games from one base to another now!

I've had CB 12 for about a week. Extremely buggy thus far. Random crashes, problems inputting variations and annotations, and a laggy Reference database.

It's a shame, as some of the new features are pretty cool (cloud analysis, deep position search, etc.).

I just worked out why - all the new games I copied across had errors!! After doing an 'Integrity Check' it deleted all but 80 games (the database originally contained nearly 2000 before I used CB12 to copy some games across!)
Just as well I have a backup!

I just tried to copy 1600 games from Mega 2013 into another base using CB12 and it took ages, with lots of flashing windows and text littered over other windows! Shocked

Have you heard any good things?

Those nice people at ChessBase have just added it to 'My Downloads' in my ChessBase shop account (together with MegaBase 2013) so now I can try it myself! Smiley

There are some new updates (the old ones were from 04.04.2012).
You can find yours here:
32-bit: http://fritzhelp.com/updates/C12/CB12_x86.exe
64-bit: http://fritzhelp.com/updates/C12/CB12_x64.exe

Strange way to merchandise a product. First release it, then the users test it.. And then some updates are coming, one by one..  Cheesy

It's in German. Don't know how it looks in some translator.

Weird! I get the impression that some functions were now a lot quicker, but that's all!

It's in German. Don't know how it looks in some translator.

The reviewer has an extra topic about all the failures of chessbase (db and firm) since years in the biggest German chess forum. So this seems credible.

I cannot generate ECO codes on games copied from an PGN file into new Chessbase 12 database.

Update: SP1 has landed, but I don't see that it fixes bugs with copying games and game count in keys.

Also beware: if you buy the download version, you don't also get Playchess access as part of the package.  This was unclear in the original language on chessbase.com, but they seem to have added some text to clarify this.  I did get a good response when I e-mailed and complained, however.

64bit slow and buggy.  Ordered the download version, and Playchess won't take the serial # to extend my membership.  Also Chessbase support cannot be reached by any reasonable method.

Maybe it'll be good, but right now, I'm not impressed.
