I'm suggesting continuing to delay d4 by White.  For instance after 5...Nc6  6. Nc4 and due to Black being unable to (immediately) play ...b5 because of Ne3, White can consider following up with a4, again perhaps before d4.

I'd say you're pushing things there, just thinking of Black playing simply with 6...e6 or 6...g6.
It could be compared to this kind of thing:  1. e4 c5 2. c3 d5 3. ed Qxd5 4. d4 Nf6 5. Nf3 e6 6. Na3 a6 (considered sub-optimal) 7. Nc4 Nbd7 8. a4 which has been considered slightly better for White.

I don't know about 5...Bg4 being dubious and 5...Nc6 being "!"; for one thing 5...Nc6 6. d4 would be another transposition to known stuff (given by e.g. Sveshnikov and Emms as leading to equality).

edit:  looking at it a bit more I think I would be inclined to prefer 5...Nc6 ...

Of course there is also 5...e6, whereupon 6. d4 is another old book line generally regarded as leading to equality.

Well, I think it's natural to play ...Nc6 earlier, say on move 6 ....

Why not on move 5. ?!  Roll Eyes

Well, I think it's natural to play ...Nc6 earlier, say on move 6 (there's no issue with c4 followed by d5, which can be a reason to play ...e6 before ...Nc6 in the standard lines), which seems likely to transpose to known stuff.

Off the top of my head (and what I played earlier today against 6...e6?! instead of 7. Qa4!), I would respond to 6...Nc6 with 7. Nc2 for supporting d4 or following up with Ne3

Delaying d4 in the 2. c3 d5 line

I'm wondering about the value of delaying d4 in the 2. c3 d5 line, and instead playing a quick Nf3 and Na3.  For instance I reached the following position this morning but did not play 7. Qa4+! (rather than 7. d4 which would transpose to well known lines) which my engine is loving.  Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems there may be some pitfalls Black needs to be wary of if White continues in this manner.
