I have for years played what I thought was a trash - but amusing - line :

1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nc6 5 Nc3 Qc7 6 g3 a6 7 Bg2 Nf6 8 0-0 h5 (similar to line 6 above, although I'm not familiar with that book).  I think I first played it in 2005 or 2006 in a local Swiss, and then at the U.S. Open in 2009 I drew an NM with it.

Then this year I saw a bunch of high-level games pop up with the move!  It's hardly my innovation, there are games going back to at least 1988 in my database with the idea, but it was fun to see grandmasters debating "my" line.

It's logical enough, in that it "wastes" a move like ...Be7 or ...h6 without being vulnerable to (Motwani's) Re1, e4-e5 idea, since the knight has the g4 square.  White can still play Re1, since 9 Re1 Nxd4 10 Qxd4 Bc5 11 Bf4 (as played in my 2009 game) is okay.

Black's position looks terrible in these middlegames, but it's really not that bad.

Well it is a possibility and I think it is also mentioned by GM Delchev in "The Safest Sicilian".  Smiley

White is doing very well accourding to statistics

For example, 11.b3 scores 82 % for White (+7 =4 -0) in my Database.

Houdini likes White's position very much after the rare 11.e5

Movsesian is a very strong GM, but he usually goes for lines that aren't mainstream-theory, and outplays his oponnent in the late middelgame and endgame. He usually also plays against players that do not have his strengh, so he shoudn't care of obtaining an advantage in the opening...

I don't like 10... bc  because it can't be correct to play Dc7, Ld7 and then don't use ist to recapture??? It looks simply strange to me.  Sad

_________

Make it sense to open the game with

1.e4 c5
2.Sf3 e6
3.d4 cd
4.Sd4 Sc6
5.Sc3 a6 !?

I know it has it's points against the english attack... but maybe it has it's points against the g3-Taimanov too.  Huh

What about the old Taimanov plan:

6.g3 Sge7 followed by ...Sd4 and ...Sc6??  Cheesy

7.Lg2 d6
8.0-0 Ld7
9.Te1 Le7
10.Sc6 Lc6
11.Dd4!

why not 10. ...bc6 (Movsesian)

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

I have recently started to play the Taimanov in Correspondence Chess, with very good results.  Cheesy

Until now I have never had to play against the g3-Variation.

I'm very lucky about this  Grin because I really don't know what to play against it.  Roll Eyes

1.e4 c5
2.Sf3 e6
3.d4 cd
4.Sd4 Sc6
5.Sc3 Dc7
6.g3 a6

Maybe black can do without a6, but this is in my eyes weaker

7.Lg2 d6
8.0-0 Ld7
9.Te1 Le7
10.Sc6 Lc6
11.Dd4!

Delchev considers only 11.Dg4 h5!  Angry

11... Sf6
12.Sd5!! and Black has problems  Embarrassed

____

7.Lg2 Sf6
8.0-0 Sd4

8... Lc5 isn't really attractiv because of 9.Sc6 dc 10.Sa4 La7 11.c4  Cry

9.Dd4 Lc5
10.Lf4 d6
11.Dd2 h6
12.Tad1 e5

12... Ke7 looks pretty cool, but doesn't work because of 13.b4!   Cry

13.Le3 Le6
13.Le3 Lg4
13.Le3 Ke7

All three options are quite safe, but black has no real chance to play for a win in my opinion. Cry

1.e4 c5
2.Sf3 e6
3.d4 cd
4.Sd4 Sc6
5.Sc3 Dc7
6.g3 a6
7.Lg2 h5!?

This would be my current choice, but I'm not sure this is enough for equality. I love pushing the h-pawn in the Taimanov but this seems for me a little bit too early.  Smiley

Critics against the variations above are wellcome.

What is your pet system against the g3-Variation?  Smiley

What should Black play?  Smiley

(I'm sorry, my English must be torture for all of you, but I'm a german-speaker and need time to receive my old skills in the English language  Cry )
