After 1.Nf3 c5 2.e4 you most probably end up in a Kingsindian Attack by White with 2...??? 3.d3/4.g3/5.Nbd2/6.Bg2 and so on.

It's rarely the case that players employing 1.Nf3 are capable of playing against the Sicilian Mainlines. On the other hand - if you know your opponent is a natural 1.e4 player but only sometimes plays 1.Nf3 then you should be careful playing 1...c5. There is a famous example of GM-game (unfortunately not memorized by me) where the black player gave himself a "??" after 1.Nf3 c5?? because White really played 2.e4 with an Open Sicilian - perhaps someone knows this one?

I play Nf3 for the odd game and (being a mainline e4 player at heart) would quite likely go 2 e4 there.....

Although I might go 2 c4 too because there's plenty of interesting lines in that.

You can play Nf3 c5!  and you dont need to fear a sicilian because  the player who plays 1.Nf3 definitely will not be ready to go for a sicilian....even if so  the there will be some 1 or 2  out of 10 Nf3 players who go for a sicilian...i am myself a benko player and i dont know sicilian....still i play c5 against Nf3. Smiley

lets say you play  100 games as black...

i think 50 games will start with e4  ( more popular)

then against 30 d4

in  15 games you face  either Nf3 or c4

and its very rare for your opponent to play e4 after playing 1.Nf3

so what if my opponent does that??

just play on your own with some basic knowledge of sicilian and even if you lose just dont worry....theres too little chance for that to repeat again... Grin

I don't know, in the games I have met 1. Nf3 with ...c5 and have gotten 2.e4 in two out of three games lately. The last one I didn't see 2. e4, but my opponent transposed to a closed Sicilian-type position with a later e4...

There is no answer to this question; you need a stand-alone defence to both c4 and Nf3. This is notoriously one of the problems with the Benko.

This.

The Benko was my main response to 1.d4 for several years. After awhile, I noticed that a lot of my opponents began to open with 1.Nf3 to sidestep it.

Move order-wise, the Benko is one of the least flexible openings.

Yes, 1. g3 could mean white is seeking a reverse benko...  Wink

my problem was the opposite: avoid being move-ordered into something else Smiley

i guess it could work to go 1.c4 nf6 2.nf3 c5. a friend of mine suggested to study the fianchetto kid which shouldn't be too troublesome and is at the same time the worst thing i can be lured into after something like 1.nf3 nf6 2.g3 as the botvinnik system is ruled out. 1.g3 requires some extra sofistication Cheesy

If you play the Sicilian, I think the easiest solution is 1.Nf3 c5.  Of course, you need to also play the Symmetrical English after 2.c4 (or straight away with 1.c4 c5), but I'm generally happy there and would rather have my pawn on c5 immediately than deal with various Reti/Catalan-like lines.

You aren't going to get a Benko against people that don't want a Benko!  My advice is to stop trying if you see a move like 1.Nf3 or 1.c4; there's probably only a 1% chance that one of those players will allow a Benko, so it's better to just have something else prepared.

I suppose 1. Ktf3 Ktf6 ; 2. g3 c5 ; 3. Bg2 and now either 3. ... g6 or 3. ...Ktc6 depending on whether or not you are willing to play a Reversed Anti-Grünfeld.

hi guys!
i have started to play the benko lately (lots of nice new books on the topic!) but i'm not really sure how to proceed after the flank openings. after 1.d4 nf6 2.c4 c5 3.nf3 i play the vaganian gambit 3...cxd4 4.nxd4 e5 so it would seem reasonable to play 1...c5 vs 1.c4. but as i do not play the sicilian it would be a probem after 1.nf3 (possibly 1.g3?!).
any ideas? Wink
thx in advance
