You'll find analysed both 4...Bb4 and 4...Be7 in the forthcoming "Playing the French" book by Quality Chess. My assesment of both lines: fine game for Black!

After viewing some of the lines in that new book, I think the assessments given for some 4... Be7 lines are a bit over optimistic.

4... Bb4 is a lot more fighting and more in spirit of what I am looking for in a game in the French.

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5... what answer for black is scoring better? A) 4... de4... 5. ..Be7-- or B) 4...de4 5... Nbd7 C)  MacCutcheon d) 4...Be7Or should we try our luck in  E) the Winawer. I would like to hear your opinion.

After 4...Bb4! I haven't been able to find a variation that gives White even the easier game, let alone an objective advantage. The Mac and the 7...cxd4!? 8.Nxd4 Qb6! Steinitz is the reason I prefer 3.Nd2.

if someone knows how white can get even a minuscule edge after 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4 c5 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.Be3 Be7 (!), I would be very interested

I found another (high level) correspondence game where white wins

Yes, interesting game...maybe you can copy it to another thread about Classical variation (keeping this one for the McCutcheon with Bg5)   Smiley

I discussed a few possibilities for a white advantage in my article: http://schaken-brabo.blogspot.be/2012/10/the-modern-french.html
Also read the comments below. It is no proof of an advantage, only a hint where to search for it.

Sorry for the offtopic but... do you feel in the Steinitz Black is doing fine as well as he does in McCutcheon and 4...Be7 lines ?

thx

I play the Winawer because of the Steinitz (3...Nf6 4.e5). If my White opponent said me he is going to play 4.Bg5 in the Classical, I would play 3...Nf6 all the time.

A question of taste, I suppose.

By the way all the people I see OTB in tournament, blitz training games... is playing Steinitz more often by far than 4.Bg5. Bad news for me  Huh

Maybe Playing the French will change that...

I like the Burn gxf6 variation followed by f5 and a6 in that order. See NIC 90.  It brings a pretty interesting game.  The database numbers are more drawish than I would expect.  I'm not sure why.

Can't White just sac a pawn to get the Bishop on an open board? 5.exd5 h6 6.Bxf6? Giving up the Bishop pair is a bad idea, but there is nothing better. 6...Qxf6 7.Bb5ch Bd7 8.Ne2 a6! 9.Bxc7ch Nxd7 10.dxe6 Qxe6 11.Qd3 cxd4 12.Qxd4 O-O-O 13.O-O-O Bc5 =/+ (Bishop)

You might consider: 4...c5! 5.e5 h6 6.Bh4 g5 7.Bg3 cxd4 8.Qxd4 Nc6 9.Bb5 Nd7 10.Qd3 Qc7 11.O-O-O a6 12.Bxc6 bxc6 =/+

Is there a concensus on what's white's best: 4.e5 or 4.Bg5 ? or is it rather a matter of personal taste?

Yes it is.
