a kind of sequel (opening-wise) happened in the Alekhine Memorial: Aronian played the main line and won
I wonder if Kramnik will play the semi-Tarrasch again

The positions in the semi-tarrasch are some of the most interesting to study in all of chess. Fischer played them and so did Pachman so they must be solid.

They are very similar to the Gruenfeld as far as pawn structure goes and I can see how they made that mistake.

I have been doing some research on them lately and was interested about how to reach that type of positions after 3. Nc3, rather than play the Nimzo or Benoni.  It was refreshing to see Kramnik wheel it out.

If Kramnik was prepared to trust it for this sort of tournament then its a good opening Smiley

Maybe even the best sort - an underestimated one! Not that this quite a standard sort of semi Tarrasch. Certainly neither game has reached the 'traditional' set up against that stuff.

Looks like that set-up (Semi-Tarrasch) worked today against Aronian, of all people. I thought it wasn't a good opening!!!

Wait a minute. Actually it is not a normal Semi-Tarrasch, since Svidler played 7.a3 instead of 7.Nf3. That is not possible in the normal Semi-Tarrasch, where White has already played Nf3.

It transposed to a normal Semi-Tarrasch in Svidler-Kramnik, and surely that must be Black's best option. However, it is not a Semi-Tarrasch until Black has played 6...c5. It is certainly not a Grunfeld.  Tongue

In a .pgn file they had the right Informant code:  D35, which is mainly the beginning of the Exchange Variation.  The actual Semi-Tarrasch (1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 c5) occupies a few of the early D40s.

Their game today in the first round of the Candidates started
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 .

Many players would automatically play 4. ..exd5, but research discovers a fair number of games with this idea including a few by Fischer. After 5. e4 Nxc3 6. bxc3 a transposition to the semi-Tarrasch is most likely.

Transposition? I thought this move order simply was the Semi-Tarrsch. Maybe I have it wrong?

Re 7.a3: This has been Schandorff's recommendation through two editions of his Queen's Gambit repertoire.

And John Watson recommends 7.Rb1 for the same reason: to avoid Bb4.

that was my first reaction too, but as long as black doesn't play c5 (which is best, but not forced) it can't be called any kind of Tarrasch
normally semi-Tarrasch is 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 c5

I'm always reminded of Fischer's note in My 60 Memorable Games -- "4...ed leads to the kind of wood-pushing that always bored me."

After 4...Nxd5 5. e4 Nxc3 6. bc c5, 7. a3 (as played by Svidler) is an old book move, I think maybe awarded an exclam by some sources.  I recall also seeing 7. Rb1.
