Thanks Stigma. I'll have to order those books as soon as I can.

I don't know why they provided the different choices in the DVD. Maybe they thought it would appeal to a wider audience that way. Bologan also has a Chessbase DVD on the Rossolimo for White of course, so maybe too there's some kind of synergistic sales effect where people who buy this one will buy that one and vice versa.

The DVD is great, I'd recommend it to anyone. Though, I'm still looking for more information on 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Bb4 that is aimed at intermediate level (I'm around 1900 rated). Does anyone know of anymore books or videos about this opening?

Welcome to the forum!

GM Raetsky is an expert on 2.Nc3 Bb4 and covers it with his co-author Chetverik in both English ...e5 and No Passion for Chess Fashion. The latter book has a chapter exclusively on 3.Nd5 Ba5!?

A bit surprised to see the table of contents. It sounds like the DVD is geared towards Black players, but then why offer so many different choices?

I have this DVD. GM Bologan is thorough in his coverage of the variations and this is something I've noticed in all his DVDs. He's overall a good presenter and we can learn a lot from this great chess teacher. A tiny qualm I have with his Chessbase DVDs are that he's kind of a quiet, reserved person and this combined with English being his second language doesn't always make for the most entertaining video presentation. (I have some of his books and he comes across as much more expressive in written form where the language barrier isn't as much of an issue).

Also I wish he would show illustrative games and talk more about general concepts after this imbalance of the minor pieces is created, and go into pawn structure, middlegame motifs, etc. It feels like his opening DVDs are aimed at more advanced players and he's taking for granted that his audience is going to know all these strategic details and concepts.

The DVD is great, I'd recommend it to anyone. Though, I'm still looking for more information on 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Bb4 that is aimed at intermediate level (I'm around 1900 rated). Does anyone know of anymore books or videos about this opening?

I thought the DVD was excellent, definitely the best resource on 1.c4 e5 for Black. Was funny in one of the later clips when he has a sneezing fit and says something like "see, this is a strong move for Black". It's also quite amazing how many good and interesting ideas Chebanenko had in many different openings.

I've gone through most of the videos and also feel good about the quality of the presentation.  The lines seem generally solid / equalizing as Black with room to outplay an opponent.  Watson provides coverage of many of the lines in his "Mastering the Chess Openings: Volume 3."

You can't mean "...avoids lines with ...e5"! If you meant ...d5, you're right, he doesn't cover the reversed dragon lines.

What we get is an intro and then 18 video clips, roughly summarised as follows:

1. c4 e5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 h6 (1 clip)
1. c4 e5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 c6 (3)
1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Bb4 (7)
1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. g3 and 3. e3 (1)
1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Nf3 Nc6 (6), including one each for 4...Nd4, Bb4 and Bc5 in response to 4. g3.

It's all presented as analysis rather than illustrative games. I haven't been through the whole dvd but what I've seen so far seems to me to be up to Bologan's usual high standard (I'm 2080 so take whatever notice of my opinion you like!). He obviously particularly likes the 3...h6 and 2...Bb4 lines as they were Chebanenko ideas. Anyway I'm happy I bought it, and if he does another one on the reversed dragon (which I play with both colours) I'll buy that too.

I am curious if anyone who owns Bologan's DVD on 1.c4 e5 could share your opinion on the lines chosen and the quality of coverage (realizing that a DVD will be by definition somewhat limited.)  From the description and sample video it sounds like it avoids lines with ...d5 and concentrates on other alternatives.  Thanks.

(edited to say ...d5  Wink)
