I wrote this thread on the ImprovingChessPlayer.com site

I use ChessBase 12 and Fritz 13 with the Windows Surface Pro. They work great with both.

Neither will run with Windows Surface RT.

When you do run them with Windows 8 on the Surface Pro, you do not access them from the Metro interface. Instead, you open the Windows desktop and access them from there, just as you would with any Windows app tat does not employ the Metro interface.  Wink

Cheers,

Mitch

I bought a Lenovo MIIX 10. Very handy, but the engine is slower than on my phone (OK my phone is quad core...). Chessbase Reader runs very well, especially in full screen mode. Anyway, the attachable keyboard locks with a magnet, it's very practical.

If you want a full power laptop/tablet hybrid then perhaps, although there are some other very weird convertible laptop ideas floating around. Rotable screens and things. They all seem a bit mad to me but might suit Smiley

7" tablets in particular aren't at all expensive and the touch screen/extra manufacturing does add cost so you're often not hugely cheaper than 2 distinct devices.

Myself I think I'd take some convincing cf the comfort of the attachable keyboard vs some of the laptop ones.

There are also some very recent/pending baytrail convertibles which will be running full windows 8.1 and should be OK in terms of processor speed but also somewhat cheaper.

@MartinC, Thanks for the reply. My knowledge of computers only extend to using them but not the technical bits.

The review and the blog is not mine. It is an amateur chessplayer somewhere in England (?).  Undecided

But on the value of SPro, I was speaking to the MS rep and he said that for similar specs, SPro is best value tablet/laptop hybrid around.  Wink

Perhaps there are laptops at better valued but a tablet/laptop hybrid?  Undecided

Basically impossible - RT is meant to only run with the metro style applications rather than old ones. With a built in expection for office. MS didn't need to do it that way but its what they chose.

So they'd need to build a new, touch specific, version of it for RT/people using the touch part of 8.1.

This is rather reasonable in some ways - you would not want to use a traditional chess database on a touch interface. Horrible idea. Looking at your review you're using the SPro as a light notebook - that's OK of course but not really optimal vs full notebooks of the same sort of overall weight etc.

Sorry Chesspubbers but I forgot about this thread and only when FunkyCold's post reminded me. The reaosn for the apology is that earlier I cam across a blogpost with a review of Surface Pro (old version) running Fritz and CB:
http://improvingchessplayer.com/windows-surface-pro-and-chess

I am thinking of getting a Surface Pro (ver 2) for my son.

It is too bad that CB did not produce a CB app for Surface RT as Microsoft was selling RTs (64Gb I think) for AUD259 student price. Fantastic for schoolchildren to do their homework as well as learn chess.

BTW, I am wondering how hard it is for someone to do an app to run CB without infringing copyright?

There isn't any decent program for W8.

What do you mean? Doesn't e.g. Chessbase, SCID and Chess Assistant work under W8?

Sorry, I meant Windows RT and even the Surface Pro. There isn't any good chess program for the touch screen Microsoft device.

I have a Surface Pro and Chessbase 12 works just fine on it.

Well, a Win 8 tablet can be configured with e.g. a USB-keyboard at least. I really would like to have a Win 8 tablet to run Chessbase, not so much for doing analysis, but rather the videos, and to be able to check my files I have.

The main issue for me is that a tablet is more portable than a laptop.

MS$ have been a bit confusing (confused?) in recent times! They've been trying to produce two things - the old style desktop interface and a much simpler touch screen driven thing. (Not == to windows phone 8 for some reason.).

RT is then almost totally restricted to the touch screen applications. Windows 8 can do both, although the combination has not amused terribly many desktop users.

With a 'full scale' windows 8 tablet you've got a different problem to consider - the full scale desktop mode is available, so Chessbase/chess OK etc will no doubt run

The question is whether you'd want to try using their interface when you've only got a touch screen to interact with an interface designed for lap/desktops could well be another matter.

Silly question, but is there a reason it wouldn't work on any  up-to-date Windows platform?
