In the US, Alex Lenderman used to play this opening regularly and championed it when he was 2500... however if you look since he became 2600 he has completely abandoned the opening. I asked him why and he said that at his level it is "an unplayable opening." I think what it comes down to which has been noted here many times is that the Smith-Morra just depends on the level of your opponent.

Humm ... Esserman thinks some other way. May be it depends on your belief in the Smith-Morra Gambit. I think it's not a winning try - though.. Wink - but an interesting and a lively one. So far there is no refutation so it's playable.

The answers to the questions are no and perfectly reasonable up to quite a decent level. You could very easily check a database for the GM level sucess rate but probably not enough data.

Overall, not terrible but probably not fully reccomendable.

Mars, there are many threads on the Smith-Morra in the anti-Sicilian section here. Also, you could subscribe to that section if you want more complete information.

I have been running into this opening a lot in blitz games lately. Is it played a lot by Grandmasters? And if so, what is the success rate for white? Thanks Smiley
