Looking at the position somewhat casually (i.e. without a computer, not that computer evals mean anything in the Classical), it looks like Black might want to go ...Kh8 at some point, with the usual idea to reroute the e7-knight via g8 and f6/h6.  Qd1-c2 doesn't do very much for White's queenside play, so Black has a pretty free hand.  Why allow Ng5-e6 when you don't have to?  Maybe:

9 ...Nh5 10 Rd1 Kh8 11 g3 ( waiting for ...f7-f5 ) Ng8 with the pseudo "threat" of Bh6.

If 10 g3 h6 looks good, as people mentioned.

In Eljanov - Al Sayed, maybe Black should try (after 10.g3 f5 11.Ng5) 11...fxe4!? to be followed soon by ...Nf5.  

I think ErictheRed is right about 10.Rd1 h6!

The quick ...f7-f5 does seem to walk into it a bit, especially after 10.Rd1.  I have no idea what to suggest as Black, though; I'll have to do a little research.  Perhaps after 10.Rd1 Black should try 10...h6!?, as plopping the Knight on e6 looks very strong there.

9.Qc2 plus Rd1 - interesting;
my interpretation: 
- to give Kg1 some "luft", very often the white king is canned by Rf1 and Be1 or Ne1, so white, after f2-f3, has a potential exit via f1-e2-d2;
- 9.Qc2 - high class waiting move, after 9. ...Nh5, white knows, where to put his Nf3--->Xe6
- 9.Qc2, fights for Xe4 in some cases after fxe4, to capture with a light piece
But, ...I´ve just 2200, so very likely, I´m completely wrong  Smiley
  
The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

Looks a bit like White is trying to play against the ...f7-f5 plan by planting the Knight on e6, and so wants to find a more useful move than 9.b4 or 9.Bd2, for instance--though I would think that 9.Bd2 has the merit of freeing c1 for a Rook, and at times the Queen wants to be on b3, so...I dunno.

There's probably some big idea that I'm not seeing yet and that wasn't illustrated in those games.  On the other hand, that second game really showed how nice it is to get a Rook to d1 quickly; maybe that's the big idea.  I like it philosophically: when looking for a new idea in a main line opening, deviate as early as you can so that you actually have a chance to play your idea!

Any comments on this move? It is *extremely* rare, but Eljanov has played it more than once and he hit 2760, so it cannot be all bad.
