Winning a pawn and opening the d-file for the white rook can hardly be a 'major strategic error'. What's more to the point is that White's alternatives seem to be even worse, which is why 8 dxc5 has an exclamation mark in the Barry eBook - it is simply the best move in the position.

Well, this is predicated more on tactics than strategy, i.e. mate. If this not working, hmmm, then I imagine Mark would be prepared to agree with you to an extent and get back to the drawing board....

Hi all,

Almost immediately after IM Palliser's update on the Barry Attack, Hebden faced Yang-Fan's line again and went for 8. dxc5. The game became messy after his opponent sacrificed a bishop. Does anyone know the theoretical verdict on this stuff?
