Does Hebden play anything else other than this Barry stuff??

I think that playing dxc5 in the Barry, in the process freeing the black d pawn to advance, looks like a major strategic error.

Winning a pawn and opening the d-file for the white rook can hardly be a 'major strategic error'. What's more to the point is that White's alternatives seem to be even worse, which is why 8 dxc5 has an exclamation mark in the Barry eBook - it is simply the best move in the position.

Well, this is predicated more on tactics than strategy, i.e. mate. If this not working, hmmm, then I imagine Mark would be prepared to agree with you to an extent and get back to the drawing board....

Does anyone know the theoretical verdict on this stuff?

I shared a flat with Mark at Torquay (for the British Championship) and remember him looking at this stuff, in particular the endgame after 14...Qa2 15 Qa3 which he liked for White.
The problem is he uses a very old machine to analyse and obviously never considered 14...Bf5, which just forces a draw it seems. Sad

GM Hebden is several hundred points above me  but I think that playing dxc5 in the Barry, in the process freeing the black d pawn to advance, looks like a major strategic error.

Hi all,

Almost immediately after IM Palliser's update on the Barry Attack, Hebden faced Yang-Fan's line again and went for 8. dxc5. The game became messy after his opponent sacrificed a bishop. Does anyone know the theoretical verdict on this stuff?

It’s funny, when I was a little boy, and told people I was going to be a comedian, everyone laughed at me. Well, no one’s laughing now.
