Yes, 6...Bb6 is the main line.  I haven't kept up with the theory, but I do know that when people started playing it around '96 or '97, the Scotch lost a lot of its popularity at the top.  Anyway it's another way for Black to play, scores better than any of the fourth move alternatives, and provides an affirmative answer to Anonymous3's original question.

4...Bb4+ 5.c3 Be7 is interesting as well.

I don't think many people will play 6...Nge7?? there, 6...Bb6 is the mainline and then 7.Qg4 Qf6 8.Qg3 d6 (8...Qg6 (?) 9.Nd2 Nge7 10.Nb5) 9.Nb5 Bxe3 looks critical

Yes, Black can play 4...Bb4+!, which is often overlooked despite being the reason the Scotch fell out of fashion after Kasparov's success brought it into the limelight again.

Compare 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5 5.Be3 Qf6 6.c3 Nge7
with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bb4+ 5.c3 Bc5 6.Be3 Nge7 and why would the queen be better on d8 than on f6?

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

There's also 7...0-0 8.0-0 Bb6 and 7...b6. I also quite like the check on b4, though Palliser & Dembo think White should get a small edge with 5.c3 Bc5 6.Nxc6.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5 5.Be3 Qf6 6.c3 Nge7 7.Bc4 Ne5 8.Be2 Qg6 9.0-0 d6! 10.Kh1 Qxe4 11.Nd2 Qg6 12.Bh4, White can force a draw after either 12...Qd3 13.Be2 Qg6 14.Bh5 or 12...Bg4 13.Qa4+ Bd7 14.Qd1 Bg4 14.Qa4+. Is there anyway sound way to avoid this draw in the Scotch besides playing 4...Nf6 or 6...Qg6 (recommended in "The Dark Knight System)?
