I notice that 4...Nd7 has been the move given in NCO (Gallagher), ECO and other such things.

4...Nd7 is the line given by Warren H. Goldman in his book "New Ideas in Old Settings: 3.Qb3 against the Caro-Kann". Just briefly one line is: 3. Qf3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Nd7 5. d4 Ngf6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Bg5 Be7 8.
O-O-O Nxe4 9. Bxe7 Qxe7 10. Qxe4 Nf6 11. Qf3 O-O
Thank you
Hadron.

I'm reminded again of something Short wrote recently, approximately "The biggest fallacy in chess is the quasi-religious belief in the primacy of the opening."

Thanks kylemeister, I forget to even check NCO these days. When i did it only mentions Ndf6, although there is a possible transposition to the position it reaches.
Still, I wonder why Schandorff would recommend allowing Nf6+ ef ?

In a recent tournament I was surprised by my opponent playing this variation. We continued 3...,de 4.Ne4 Nf6 5.Bc4 Nbd7 6.Nf6+. Checking in my copy of Schandorff's book I found that I had remembered the first few moves of the recommended antidote. However, after 4..., Nf6 White had the option of 5.Nf6+ ef which may be okay but does not thrill me. Are there any drawbacks to playing 4.Ne4 Nd7 intending 5.Bc4 Ngf6 6.d4 Nb6 and taking the d4 pawn as recommended by Schandorff ? If not and I've not been able to discover any, why play 4...., Nf6 allowing white the option of doubling Black's pawns ?
