Looking at my database I see recent Tiviakov games with 5...c6 and 5...g6 (as well as other lines). It's not surprising that he mixes it up, making himself harder to prepare for. Can't expect him to follow his DVD (which is some years old now) in the majority of games.

My guess would be that it supports the ...e5 break and exerts influence over the key d4 square.

Hi,

Doest anyone know why in the main line of the Scandi with Qd6, Tiviakov seems to prefer 5...g6 (vs. 5...c6 in its DVD)?
