I don't think there is one.  Look at the hoops Everyman has to jump to fit all their explanatory texts into the .pgn format.  Basically you open up a game that is just text and no moves.  I don't think PGN is designed for anything other than game notation.

Chapter 1
Model games for White / Black (perhaps some classics should be added to the database?)

Chapter 2
Typical middle game motifs

Chapter 3
Typical endgames

Chapter 4
Theoretical developments

I've made a few experiments but the PGN format is hopeless for such a layout! No links to games, no text files, etc. The most likely possibility is an introductory 'game' (like the first one in the 4 Qc2 Nimzo eBook) with an annotation pointing out which games feature important middlegame/endgame themes, but it is not pretty!
Does anyone have any ideas to get round the PGN limitations? Undecided

I agree with Matemax on the need for IMs and GMs to sift the grain from the chaff. If the first three chapters could be written and structured in a clear, concise, coherent and cogent manner for intermediate players to learn (self-learning), that would be a fantastic product.
MY priorities are for lines and explanations, model/exemplar games with explanations of common tactical tricks, positional tricks, and game plans.

As a Mac user, definitely pgn!

And not charged separately but part of package with small increase in subs if necessary.

Thanks Tony and Matemax!

How to monetize that extra work?

I'm not very keen on charging separately, maybe just increase the subscription a little to pay for the extra work.

I second that it is something that sounds very very appealing, although aslo a lot of extra work - at least initially, given the sheer numberr of intersting/important variations/systems.

That's why we need our GMs and IMs here: they know which variations need to be separated and which ones can be combined. E.g. the Panov Attack leads to very different pawn structures than the Advance Variation within the Caro Kann and should therefore realized in two different books. The Closed Ruy Lopez on the other side could be something including Breyer, Chigorin and even the early d3-systems.

I don't think it is too difficult for Tony and his team to come up with a sensefull list of E-Books - mostly the will be the same as the ones already existing.

In PGN form, presumably?

Each chapter should be updated on a regular basis.

Although mostly Chapter 4, no doubt.

PGN is preferred to not exclude our MAC-users.

For the chapters:
1-3 should give a good basis and a feeling for the variation. I dont think they need to be updated too often. Chapter 4 is similar to existing Chesspublishing E-books.

Sounds like a very good idea! Pretty similar to the format Chess-stars are using now.

Tony, I was not aware you were waiting for responses. I think it is brilliant for improving players but was not sure you would think it viable, hence did not respond. If this is available, I will certainly seriously consider re-subscribing to ChessPub.

Those would be amazing, but a lot of extra work for the section chief or for Tony.  How to monetize that extra work?

I was waiting to see if this generated any interest from other members, but apparently not. Sad

... I would suggest a new form of chesspublishing ebooks:

They should present themes to certain lines - eg.

Chapter 1
Model games for White / Black (perhaps some classics should be added to the database?)

Chapter 2
Typical middle game motifs

Chapter 3
Typical endgames

Chapter 4
Theoretical developments

Each chapter should be updated on a regular basis.

I have all the games of on section in one database and already use the database "source" within HCE to follow the lines. There seems to be no difference.

Good point, having the eBook is only slightly more convenient if you have HCE. ChessBase as well to some extent (using the 'Find position in ...' function, although I can't change the Reference database 'on the fly' to a PGN file in CB12 unfortunately).

I am not sure if I really need those eBooks!? I have all the games of on section in one database and already use the database "source" within HCE to follow the lines. There seems to be no difference.

I've just added a PGN eBook on 4 Qc2 to the Nimzo downloads page. This is not quite as easy to use as the ChessBase ones, but does work nicely with other programs, Hiarcs Explorer for instance (change the 'Source' to 'Database'), and even ChessBase is OK as you can get the individual games by right-clicking on the board (in the Guides) and searching in the eBook.
