It is recommended by King in a Power Play DVD (IIRC). Rabiega is the white hero in some of the games. Both Williams and Vitiugov treat the variation with some model games that were helpful to me, as did Watson.

Of course Berg must have some ideas about it, but I haven'y checked yet.

And Chesspub of course Smiley

Dealing with 4.exd5 and 3.exd5

Are there any good sources that deal with the Exchange Winawer and the Exchange variation?

I'm not looking for mainly variations (which I find especially easy to forget in this kind of piece play structure) but more set-ups, rules of thumb, annotated model games.

Most of the many books I have spend most of their energy saying how unambitious and unpromising exd5 is for White. But still, it's been played by many really strong players over the years from Morphy to Kasparov so surely something attracted them?

Occasionally I get crushed by someone much lower rated, and then decide to look into it properly but then never get around to it. And sometimes you see a game between strong players where Black still gets squashed - so I suppose I'm hardly the only one having trouble with these lines sometimes...

Perhaps the best way is to start playing it as White to see what lines/set-ups I don't like to face? The following game from the local series actually made me consider playing 4.exd5, - it's impressive how easily White gains the advantage just by keeping control of f5 - but not every Frenchie plays the Winawer...
