Yeah, but it's amazing that Re2 draws since there are only two files away from the king.

Actually, playing ...Re2 rathen that ...Rd2 is an obvious move for this kind of endgames. You want the maximum number of files away from the king in order to give checks.

Could you explain with words (ideas) what is the main reason that 9...Re2 draws while 9...Rd2 loses?

Brilliant stuff, Poghosyan.  I am very excited to have a look at this today.  I will put up a pgn with your analysis when I'm through.  (Unless you have a pgn handy?)

Thank you proustiskeen for drawing attention to the new plan suggested by GM Aaagard at his webpage. My analysis confirms that Aagard`s plan indeed draws (along with my move 2…g4) but  the draw is not that easy as apparently presumed by Aaagard. In my main line Black manages to escape in a study-like manner.

1.Kd4 g5! 2.Kd5 Kg6= 3.Kc5 f6! 4.f3 gxh4 [or 4...Kf5 5.Ra8 gxh4 6.gxh4!=] 5.gxh4 Kf5! 6.Ra8 Kf4! 7.Kb6 Kxf3 [or 7...Rb2+ 8.Ka7 Kxf3!=] 8.Rb8 Rb2+! 9.Ka7 Re2! 10.Rb5 Kg4 [or 10...f5=] 11.Rb4+ Kg3! 12.Kb6 Re6+ [or 12...f5=] 13.Ka5 Re7! 14.Rb7 Re8 [or 14...Re3 15.a7 Ra3+ 16.Kb4 Ra1 17.Rc7 Kf4 18.Kb5 Kg3 19.Rc3+ Kg2=] 15.a7 Ra8=.

I use here “!” symbol according to Nunn convention, i. e. as the only move which maintains the current evaluation of the position.
For details see the attached file.

P.S. I have changed my user name since I have lost my previous password.

There's a new blog post up at Quality Chess on the famous - due to the work done in this forum! - Kantorovich / Steckner endgame (DEM 9-144).  Aagaard thinks he has a new way to draw.  I'll put up a pgn later, but someone else might want to have a whack at it.
