Cuestioning the soundness of 12...Nc5, have you taken a look at 13.a3 Rb8 14.b4!? after 14...Na4 15.Nxa4 bxa4 White seems to be solid at the queenside and ready to start kingside action.
Or at 14...Nb7 15.fxe6 fxe6 16.g5 fxg5 17.Bh3

In both lines White seems to get a scary initiative.

In fact Fischer played this against Gligorich and the game continued with the f5-mainline in which Black castles kingside.
Fischer covers it in his 60 Memorable games and calls the game "Castling into it".

The mainline seems to be the same 12.f5 Ne5 13.Qh3 0-0 14.Rg1 Kh8 where 15.Rg3 Rg8 gives White good kingside chances.
The fact that I looked at the ICCF database from 2014 and didnt find any game with 11...gxf6 makes me think that the line may be indeed busted.

Perhaps someone should post the correspondence refutation.

I figured as much, but can anyone offer concrete analysis to verify this?

I am pretty sure Fischer played gxf6, so will, have been analysed quite a bit!

Dubious but almost playable appears the verdict. There haven't been any games by top class players in many years.

Apologies if this line has been discussed here before...

Last week, I found in my closet a crumpled up sheet of paper, presumably from a while ago with some brief thoughts scribbled down about the move 11...gf in the followed well-known Najdorf line:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Be7 8.Qf3 Qc7 9.0-0-0 Nbd7 10.g4 b5 11.Bxf6 gf (Instead of the ubiquitous 11...Nxf6 and the interesting 11...Bxf6 which will probably transpose but also offers the b5 pawn)

I'm really curious as to whether this line is actually playable...I don't have access to an engine (not a strong one anyways) but I vaguely remember a3 and b4 being a critical line I think:

12.f5 is probably best and according to the "analysis" I found, 12...Nc5 is better than 12...Ne5 (although this obviously can be questioned)
13.fe fe

       A) 14.g5 looks intriguing but it probably isn't so great after 14...0-0 (or even 14...fg 15.Qh5+ Kd7 maybe)
       B) 14.a3 Rb8 15.b4(!) and now I remember discussing with my friend this odd 15...0-0!?! piece sack idea...

Any thoughts?  Smiley
