The Dragon is a great opening for club players when you get to play Dragons.  Unfortunately, 2...d6 isn't the ideal move against the 50% of club players who play moves other than 2 Nf3 and 3 d4.

This is a major reason I switched from 2...d6 Sicilians to the Taimanov years ago.  Too many people playing lines where ...d6 wasn't a move I needed very badly.

That said, the Yugoslav Attack is one of the most fascinating lines in this game, and every other line against the Dragon is just fine for Black; the active development of the bishop really only has the one drawback, and that's the possibility of h2-h4-h5xg6.

Whoops, yes i must be thinking of the one he wrote with Nielsen.

I had thought he had worked with Donaldsen on an updated version of the Silman & Donaldson book, but the book he wrote with Donaldsen was the strategic opening repertoire. Apologies all for any confusion.

There was also an AD book by Hansen and Nielsen.

Are you thinking of "Accelerated Dragon" by Donaldson and Silman, maybe?

If the move by move book is still coming out, i would guess it would be on the Accelerated Dragon...hasnt Hansen written a book on that before (with Donaldsen?)

Vigorito's book has 25 pages on the Chinese Dragon alone, with some lines going beyond move 30, including a Carlsen game. More than enough for an amateur like me, and I think the book is excellent.

I don not remember exactly all parts but as I recall it that book was a must to keep up in the critical lines but did not have a compete coverage of every line.

Hello Bragesjo, you said that Vigorito's book is a must-buy book, I could just read a bit of the Chinese Dragon chapter and it seemed very light to me, the analysis are very short.

Is there a part of the book you find very good? Have you read the Chinese part?

Thanks for your response

For my part it looks a bit illogical to write a Move by Move book with such a theory demanding opening but I will definitely buy this book.

Speaking of intro book, there was a book that I actually liked that was called "Secrets of the Sicilian Dragon" by Gufeld and Schiller.
Generally I dont like any of these authors book but that book was actually good, it was a excellent idea book. Time passed and Gufeld died and Schiller realized a 2nd edition. However that book did not cover new thematical ideas and new lines that had been develop the decade (at least) between them and he had replaced some parts of the book but not done anything to the ideas and thematical parts.

Dan at everyman confirmed the rumour. Book due in Spring. I seem to recall that Hansen has written books for Gambit in the past and if memory serves me right he is a diligent author. Perhaps surprising that a new book is coming out so soon after the chess developments book. Hopefully he will not try and cover older lines which are inferior or not played much these days. I would like to see him mainly focus on the lines that have been popular in 2013 and 2014. It would also be helpful if he can present a few well played model games from which those new to the dragon can pick up the main ideas.

No idea. But from my database, Carsten Hansen hasn't played a Dragon game since the early 90's.  Sad

There are rumours going round that Everyman are planning a Sicilian Dragon Move by Move book next year I think the author is Carsten Hansen.

Is this true?

I would prefer Nielsen's by far - he's a top-tier player who's played the Dragon in some pretty high-profile games. His wife, Victoria Cmilyte, is a well-known Dragon expert as well (iirc). I have the DVDs and like them a lot. Williams might be a more entertaining lecturer, but for something as theoretical as the Dragon, I'd rather have an expert. Nielsen is great too, as long as you can tolerate his overuse of the word, "well".

Unfortunately I have not looked the DVDs, I switched main defence from Dragon shortly before Nielsens DVD was realised.

I can however recommend the subscription part of this site to keep up with latest development and all older games are also avalible.

Thank you for the helpful comments.

The chess developments book is my main reference. As I like watching DVD's and it appears the ones on the Dragon are pretty good. What do you think is the best set of DVDs on the Dragon- Williams or Nielsen? The samples I have seen and the various comments I have seen on this forum suggest that both are good. Is Williams more inspirational and Nielsen provide more detail?
