From time to time GMTonyKosten rebuilds the index and it's fine again

Yes, I will do this now and it should be better afterwards.

Self-Aggregating Entropy Secondary to Coding Errors? Sounds like a paper title, haha. But I thought there is/was a tendency to sometimes have posts listed oldest to newest. And that there is a user choice to reorder? That isn't what I posted about, but thought it is an occaasional annoyance that is fixable. That's what I thought George was asking about. Above that, it seemed to me proustiskeen and Keano were discussing matters closer to what I responded to?? My bad if I wasn't clear enough to whom I was responding to.

No, what George Jempty is referring to is within a subforum the topics should be ordered by Last Post (date), but they aren't. For example in the Marshall board you can see this quite clearly at the bottom of page 2. The dates go 2006, 2008, 2003, 2010, 2012, 2006, 2022, 2020.

It's an indexing problem. From time to time GMTonyKosten rebuilds the index and it's fine again. But only for a while. There must be some buggy code in the BBS software leading to disorder over time.

As long as there is a "General" topics forum there will always be occasional postings there that might better be placed within a sub-topic. I have probably been guilty of this myself. If a member has the ambition to join in the first place then (with no offense to any), it seems to me that it is the search engine that will be the most helpful tool. What is the chance that a post in the Ruy Lopez might, through discussion, drift into playing the Open Games in general? The sub-topics are a helpful start but the effort to learn is on the user.

I don't understand the ordering of the posts within the sub-topics.  Shouldn't they be in descending chronological order?

Perhaps some sort of compromise can be reached reducing the number of sub forums?

I didn't mean to pick on that particular thread. I meant more that if we are to have the subfora (I suppose that's the right word?), then we need to be strict and consistent, otherwise it defeats the purpose of having them.

I'm a mod for that section, and I'm here (literally) every day. I didn't see a problem with the thread being where it was, and no one asked me to move it.

A bigger problem is that newer threads have not consistently been started in the proper subforum, so the organization isn't really being followed anyway. There is a thread in the 1.d4 d5 2.c4 forum called "QGD vs Ragozin;" shouldn't that be in the QGD Mainline subforums?

That's a problem, I suppose some of the Moderators aren't coming here as often as they should, I'll have a look at it.

A tagging (metadata) system would answer most of the objections to the current hierarchical (category) system. But no doubt it would require some coding to add tagging. (Um, just to clarify, the objections are not mine, just ones I have read.)

I'm somewhat against the subforums, as we've discussed before.  A bigger problem is that newer threads have not consistently been started in the proper subforum, so the organization isn't really being followed anyway. There is a thread in the 1.d4 d5 2.c4 forum called "QGD vs Ragozin;" shouldn't that be in the QGD Mainline subforums?

Then there are threads that straddle the line between different subforums because of transpositional possibilities or because people became interested in a slightly different but related opening.

I appreciate the effort that was put into the change, but prefer the old layout, myself.

Is this thread about  the plethora of sub forums now.

I am against it, think we are losing valuable posts now because of the confusion.

The reorganisation is extremely helpful and I'm able to find what I'm looking for much more quickly and easily than I could before. Thank you for all the time and effort you clearly put into this.

I'm glad, it was worth all the effort if it makes the Forum more useful for the members. Smiley

I'm sure everyone will have noticed that the Forum has been totally reorganised with all major openings having their own sub-board now. Smiley

I must say I did expect a bigger reaction to such a significant change! Roll Eyes
