Perhaps some sort of compromise can be reached reducing the number of sub forums?

I didn't mean to pick on that particular thread. I meant more that if we are to have the subfora (I suppose that's the right word?), then we need to be strict and consistent, otherwise it defeats the purpose of having them.

I'm a mod for that section, and I'm here (literally) every day. I didn't see a problem with the thread being where it was, and no one asked me to move it.

A bigger problem is that newer threads have not consistently been started in the proper subforum, so the organization isn't really being followed anyway. There is a thread in the 1.d4 d5 2.c4 forum called "QGD vs Ragozin;" shouldn't that be in the QGD Mainline subforums?

That's a problem, I suppose some of the Moderators aren't coming here as often as they should, I'll have a look at it.

A tagging (metadata) system would answer most of the objections to the current hierarchical (category) system. But no doubt it would require some coding to add tagging. (Um, just to clarify, the objections are not mine, just ones I have read.)

I'm somewhat against the subforums, as we've discussed before.  A bigger problem is that newer threads have not consistently been started in the proper subforum, so the organization isn't really being followed anyway. There is a thread in the 1.d4 d5 2.c4 forum called "QGD vs Ragozin;" shouldn't that be in the QGD Mainline subforums?

Then there are threads that straddle the line between different subforums because of transpositional possibilities or because people became interested in a slightly different but related opening.

I appreciate the effort that was put into the change, but prefer the old layout, myself.

Is this thread about  the plethora of sub forums now.

I am against it, think we are losing valuable posts now because of the confusion.

The reorganisation is extremely helpful and I'm able to find what I'm looking for much more quickly and easily than I could before. Thank you for all the time and effort you clearly put into this.

I'm glad, it was worth all the effort if it makes the Forum more useful for the members. Smiley

By the way, I got a rather frightening response after typing in "www.chesspub.com" into my browser: "Welcome to Utimate Web Hosting. Thanks for signing up with us. This will now be your default page...<segue to Ultimate Web Hosting site. No chesspub in sight.>"

Is this a security problem or a configuration glitch or something else?

Oops! I decided to put a redirect back on from http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl to avoid the faulty link problem Smyslov_fan described ... and I carelessly deleted another redirect! Embarrassed
Hopefully everything is working properly now!

I think the sub-boards are very useful indeed. Thank you!

I think subfora for books/DVDs are unnecessary and may just create clutter.  Discussions about a product usually spill over into evaluating particular positions and variations.

True, but often I noticed that, say, a repertoire book would cover several opening lines and so I couldn't stick it into one of the sub-boards.

I think subfora for books/DVDs are unnecessary and may just create clutter.  Discussions about a product usually spill over into evaluating particular positions and variations.  If I have a comment about Simon Williams' recommendation in the Classical Dutch, a separate subforum would create a dilemma where to post it.

Tony, Thank you for your work in upgrading and improving the forum!  I find it amazing that a famous Grandmaster is carefully pruning and sorting all these silly threads created by little peasants like me.  Smiley

If anyone has any suggestions for any more sub-boards that they think are required please don't hesitate to say, but it occurred to me that several sections could do with a new sub-board just for books and DVDs, what do Forum members think? Is this a good idea or are there already too many sub-boards? Undecided
