I like having my big wood chess set out on my table at home, but it does consume a lot of space which can be a problem. And of course it is immobile.
Recently I risked
$30 to buy a tiny wood chess set, and I am very glad I did. Here is the Http URL for interested buyers:
Tiny Wood Chess Set http://shop.chesscafe.com/Passport-Magnetic-Travel-Chess-Set-EQP1249.htm This is not a "travel" chess set because 'travel' means the position can be maintained on the board even when the set & board are packed into a suitcase. Personally I have never needed a 'travel' chess set, and my guess is that only the occasional Correspondence Chess player would need a 'travel' chess set.
Instead...
I need a
'mobile' chess set, one that I can easily carry from room to room in my house while maintaining the position on the board. And of course a 'mobile' chess set consumes only a tiny amount of space on my table.
The above linked-to tiny wood chess set is an excellent 'mobile' set, which has a more
elegant feel than do plastic sets. The pieces cannot be "weighted" of course, so the piece bases have magnets. Fine.
I wonder by the chess board cannot be the magnet, so that the pieces do not need to have magnets. I dislike how the magnetized bases make the pieces cling together, because it forces me to use two hands (or otherwise struggle) to pick up a single piece from a pile of the pieces.
The eight squares of say row_'8' combine for a length of 6 inches (152mm). However, the physical board adds extra space for captured pieces, extending the side length to 7.5 inches (191mm). In the dimension of column_'a' there is almost no added space.
Each individual square is 19mm on each side.
The diameter of the king's base is 13mm. The height of the king is 25mm.
