The Advance variation and the Classical and Rubenstein variations were updated in October 2024.They are available as PDF and CBV files. They contains 327 and 788 annotated games respectively.

The great advantage of the CBV files is that contain games. The PDF files refer to games but do not contain games or live links to games.

FreeRepublic - Thanks for the heads-up regarding the updated eBooks. I think you might be kidding about the 5th edition since the eBooks cover all variations and are not a repertoire as presented in the various editions of Play the French.

Well yes, my comment was not altogether serious, for the reasons you articulated so well. However, if John Watson were to work on a 5th edition, he might start with these eBooks.

At the moment there are PDFs eBooks on four sections of the French, all dated 2 Oct 2024. Two sections have corresponding CBV eBooks. I look forward to seeing CBV eBooks on all four sections.

For the moment, the entire French defense is covered and up-to-date in the PDF format. I think this is a valuable resource for all Francophiles and for those preparing to play against the French Defense.

FreeRepublic - Thanks for the heads-up regarding the updated eBooks. I think you might be kidding about the 5th edition since the eBooks cover all variations and are not a repertoire as presented in the various editions of Play the French. Nevertheless, it would be great if we actually had a 5th edition. The 4th was published a dozen years ago in 2012, and that 12-year gap has been the longest between editions, matching the one separating the 1st (1984) and 2nd (1996). I'm concerned that even if a 5th edition is in the works, its release could be delayed by the complications arising from the acquisition of Everyman by Quality Chess.
