I did notice that in the stem game, Black advanced the pawn to a4 and might have played it to a3, had White not played a3 himself. Later in the game, Black provoked or allowed White the e4-e5 advance. He was than able to use the space on the a file to play Ra8-a5 thereby increasing the pressure on the e5 pawn, which is already threatened (as usual) by Knights on c6 and d6.

The early advance of the a pawn can  secure the c5 square for the dark square Bishop, even though Moro later dropped it back to e7.

Could be a few things. Avoiding deep theory of course.

Then either simply queenside expansion as black normally does in these sorts of positions, or waiting for g3 so black can go for a dxe4 ^ dxe4 e5 then Bc5 etc sort of thing.

Or, of course given who it is!, something else deeply inventive Smiley Whites play is very slow here so black has the option of messing around like this.
