To me, a more interesting question is: What should White play after 4...Bc5? Fressinet's lines on chess24 look solid, maybe White even has to resort to amusing stuff like Carlsen's 5.Ba4 if he wants Black out of his comfort zone early.

And here is my question: why does Black play Bd7? Isn't this a waste of tempo? What does inserting Bd7 give Black?

If Black intends .. g6 and .. Bg7, playing .. Bd7 first defuses White's possibility of an immediate d4.

Why Bd7 in d3 d6 line?

Hi,

A question about the line: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. d3 d6 5. 0-0 (or c3 or Nbd2).

I really like for Black to play 5. ... Bd7. This is also a very popular move (and the best one) according to the database. Then I would follow with g6, Bg7, 0-0 etc.

And here is my question: why does Black play Bd7? Isn't this a waste of tempo? What does inserting Bd7 give Black?

Thanks,
T.

I don't think 4...d6 5.0-0 g6 6.d4 Bd7 achieves much of anything.
7.Re1 (the immediate 7.d5 allows Black to play 7...Nb8 8.Bxd7+ Nbxd7 9.Re1 c6! with a good game) Bg7 8.d5 Ne7 9.Bxd7+ Nxd7 is one of those typical KID structures where your engine will inform you that white is better, which of course is wrong. Black can opt for the traditional ...f5 play, or set for exchanging dark-squared bishops with ...0-0, ...Kh8 and ...Ng8. I think he is OK in both cases.

Is Black OK after 4...d6 5.d4? with the idea to meet 5...Bd7 with 6.c4 and 5...g6 with 6.d5? I am not sure....

Can you really play 4...d6 5.d4 Bd7 6.c4? Isn't that pawn on e4 en prise? I cannot see any fiendish trick...
How bad can it be for Black playing an old Steinitz a whole tempo up?

Yeah, i am an idiot, everybody knows that! I meant 5.O-O and only if 5...g6 6.d4! and if 5...Bd7 then 6.c4. Of course 5...Be7 is playable, but practice has shown that White is better (a game coming to mind is Anand- Najditch few years back in Baden-Baden?).

I think the position in Carlsen-Anand, 2014 game 2 is more pleasant for white if objectively equal, although maybe that is influenced by the result. I also think white got a riskless position in several games recently, like in Tata Steel and Baramidze-Aronian.

What's your definition of "more pleasant"?
Both 4...Bc5 and 4...d6 are OK for Black, the choice is a matter of taste. Also, Aronian recently seems to trust 4...Bd6.

What should black playa after 4.d3? All the SuperGMs seem to play Bc5, but in recent games it seems like white has gotten a more pleasant position.
