For White and the key question, I can only quote a french movie : "with a misunderstanding, it can work"..because the "practical playing" versus "knowledge smashing" is endless debate.

Black has nasty check on e-file.

It's not as if it is that bad for White, but it gives Black a very easy game. Key question would be whether you could outplay potential opponents from the position and whether results would be better than taking on the French in a more mainstream manner.

Sensible replies here.
Against a ...c6 setup, I thought of pushing c4 in catalan style, but I am not that convinced.
dom's line very problematic to say the least.

I guess g3 is too slow (not attacking anything) and avoiding c5, Black has nasty check on e-file.

1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.g3 Nf6 5.Bg2 Qe7+

and that's why White plays (at least) a wing gambit after 3.e5 closing center for little time

A better question might be, what can White achieve with such a fianchetto with Black still having the option of ...c6?

Sure, but can black achieve anything without pushing c5 in this kind of position?

A key point is the lack of a pawn on c5, I'd think.

Black has it there in the Sicilian line, obviously, but not necessarily plonking it there via the French.

Against the e6 sicilian, I like to play 1. e4 c5 2. Cf3 e6 3. g3. Play often unfolds like that: Cc6 4. Fg2 d5 5. exd5 exd5 with the intent to push d4 to create a IQP for black.

What do you of this sequence to allow a transposition from a french: 1. e4 e6 2. Cf3 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. g3

Thanks you!
