Ah yes, the Black according to Karpov book. A bit old now perhaps, but a very serious and solid repertoire. There's also Play the Nimzo-Indian by Dearing which likewise had a solid and sound slant against most of White's lines, though with some frisky exceptions like the Romanishin-Psakhis variation and 4.Qc2 d5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.Qxc3 Ne4 7.Qc2 c5 8.dxc5 Nc6.

I think of both of these books as a bit more advanced, while the Vera and Emms books, as well as Black, Explained, are more basic. Though the Emms book actually has a lot of detailed analysis for a Move by Move book.

Some day a Grandmaster Repertoire about the Nimzo will come.

I just look to see the lines John Emms has analysed for Black recently, and play them! Smiley

Chess Explained: The Nimzo Indian by Vera would be my suggestion. It's by far my favorite Nimzo book.

Chess Openings for Black According to Karpov by Khalifman is also very good.

The MBM should be the first I guess.

In the discussions here about the Nimzo, Mastering the Nimzo-Indian has also been mentioned. It is pretty short and maybe not so much for Black as it is a general introduction to the Nimzo. The author is well known here at Chesspub Smiley I liked Mastering the French and Mastering Spanish better because they contained more material, but Mastering the Nimzo-Indian is also very good and IIRC some members recommended it precisely because it is short.

You also have Sokolov's book Winning Chess Middlegames, but it isn't geared towards Black's side either, and probably not used as a primer! Power Chess with Pieces by Timman, a book about bishops vs knights is also useful as a complement, as is of course the material here at Chesspub!

As far as books go I can't better the earlier suggestions, but I would recommend you study Nimzowitsch's games in this system to get a feel for how he interpreted the opening and to fully understand the battle against the doubled c-pawns that White incurs in many variations. After all, if you're not happy with giving up the bishop pair, the Nimzo isn't the opening for you!

I second the Move by Move recommendation. One of the very best of the series.

Judging from various reviews, Reinaldo Vera's book on the Nimzo-Indian was one of the best in the Chess Explained series, with good explanations and a basic Black repertoire. I only got it yesterday (!), so I can't really confirm or disconfirm that. It's shorter than Emms' MBM book but has mostly different lines, so you could get both and pick and choose.

Chess Openings for Black, Explained also contains a Nimzo repertoire (besides the Bogo-Indian, lines against the Catalan, the Accelerated Dragon, Anti-Sicilians etc. for a full Black repertoire).
