Ambitious!

I'm glad he doesn't cover Berlin. There are plenty of books on that already and White has his choice of "Exchange French" variations against it.

Thanks, it seems to be the Adams repertoire then. Adams use to be exclusively a Marshall Attack player, but he has recently been using the Breyer over last couple years, particularly when he wants to win.

Increasingly anti-Marshall tries are moves like h3 and d3, which don't do a lot, but discourage Black from attempting sacrifices for the initiative. Provided White hasn't played d4, both players can manoeuvre. Playing Nc6-b8 with the idea of Nb8-d7 is a useful idea, which in turn increases research into the traditional Breyer move order.

Personally I would have preferred Berlin coverage instead of Marshall because I think the Berlin is more relevant atm, there seems to be a trend moving away from Marshall at the top level. Some notable losses in the Marshall Attack in last several months such as; MVL-Adams in Biel and Karjakin-Svidler in World Cup. Elites seem to be using 7...0-0 move-order happy to go into the Anti-Marshalls, but if 8.c3 they go back into mainlines aiming for Zaitsev or Breyer. That's the trend I've been noticing from recent games in my database at least, whether it's fashion or the Marshall Attack is in trouble I'm not good enough to say.

If the Breyer is covered, it will be cool if one of the authors can incorporate a Breyer-style response to 6.d3, like in Anand-So or Anand-Carlsen, although admittedly Anand won both those games. For now there's Svidler's Chess24 series which is pretty neat.

I doubt Bologan will be covering the Yurtaev Variation with 5...b5 6.Bb3 Bc5 but it would be nice to see a repertoire book for Black on this line at some point.

Are you sure about the Breyer by Bologan? Couldn't it be also just Berlin(Carlsen) and Marshall(Aronian)?

Quality Chess recently hinted on their blog about plans for a Breyer repertoire book for Black. So there may be more than one option.

Judging from the description on the Amazon pg I would assume he's covering the Breyer with either the Berlin or Marshall Attack. The latter two coming under Aronian's choices.

I think for the Breyer in particular it's about time there was some serious coverage of this line from the Black side, I have always wanted to take it up but there's been no modern resources to learn from. Fyi I don't count Kaufman's weak effort as a serious resource, more a database dump with superficial assessments attached.

The page count on this new tome by Bologan is bigger than the Black Weapons in the Open Games book!

He's played it a number of times, although seems to have prefered the Berlin in the last few years.

Looking forward to the new Ruy Lopez book by Bologon! Heard from the grape vine it will cover the Breyer  Smiley

Isn't that Carlsen's favorite variation against the Spanish? It was also the crucial game that Mariya Muzychuk beat Natalia Pogonina when she faced it as White.

It should be a similar approach as the open games book with two lines vs everything.
