Smyslov_Fan is right, the position I gave is not really a fortress. The exact position as given by Müller is:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

Now g4+ does not work, but f4 establishes fortress.

Thanks Girkassa, much better! (though 5 pawns on the h-file ?!?!? Grin)

Yes, I thought a 6th pawn would be unnecessary since White would have to sacrifice it immediately or give stalemate.

The one diagram that sticks out to me as not a fortress is Klick's second one. Black's idea there is just to trade off pawns, not to hold down a fortress. Black just plays g4 then f4, trading off the last pawn.

To get the fortress, we could just move the kings over one square and then g4 and f4 doesn't work anymore.

chk's examples with diagram:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

And I'd like to add a more complicated example:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Black has a fortress, but only if he plays carefully, e.g. with 1...Ke7. 1...Kg7? 2.Ke6 loses because Black's king will eventually get stalemated and has to play ...g4.

Sorry everybody for not using FENs:

(i) Original poster - 1st diagram: You can add as many pawns as you like on the h-file.

(ii) W: Kf7, Bf5, Ph5  vs.  B: Kh8, Pg7

Chapter 4.1 in Dvoretzkys endgame manual (3rd edition in german) contains several fortress ideas:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

We all know this one:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

Karsten Müller shows in one of his endgame-DVDs that the following also is a draw:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

At the same time he mentions that there are other fortresses vs. the bishop, but does not show them. Which can we add to the list?
