...Nge7 was a bit passive. I tried Bb4 once to give a doubled pawn but in ending the white dark squared bishop became powerful.

What are your experiences with 4.Nf3 Bb4 and Nge7? A small imbalance, but a beginning.

I play 3...Nc6 against 3.Nc3. White exchanged on d5 after that move. I cannot play ...c6 immediately. On a long term, may be after removing the Knight from c6.

Yes, my fault. I assumed -incorrectly- a pure exchange move order.

Of course:

3.exd5 exd5 4.Nc3 c6!
3.Nc3 c6?

I was playing the HR variation two years ago and never faced this pseudo-exchange. Everybody was playing 4.Bb5, 4.Nf3 or 4.e5.

In the given variation, I agree that the resultant position is a little dull, too much dry. Maybe vs lower rated players, playing 3...Bb4 or 3...Nf6 was a practical anternative to get sharper positions.

Sorry

Yes, CanadianClub must have meant 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nc3 c6. I don't see 3.Nc3 c6 as a particularly sensible version of the French.  Smiley

Maybe you can play not 3...Nc6 against 3.Nc3.

3...c6 makes sense to me, making the Knight on c3 a little silly; and umbalancing a little the position. Knights to f6 and g6, Bishop to d6 and easy play for Black.

I interpreted the OP as saying that the exchange occurs after the Knight has already gone to c6, ie: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nc6, so your otherwise sensible suggestion is obviously not available here.

Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but if you ask me the best strategy is to have another defence in your repertoire in addition to this, one that gives more imbalance and winning chances!

That's how I always thought when I played the French (on a break from it now) - I always had another more unbalanced defence ready as well (some Sicilian or the Pirc/Modern). Though the French is great for getting solid and sound positions, even against stronger opponents.

I play 3...Nc6 against, 3.Nc3 and very often, white goes for exchange variation and I see the following position on board. The position is totally symmetrical & very drawish (much more than standard exchange where we can create asymmetry). Often the opponents are strong in ending and it is difficult to outplay. What is the best strategy/piece positioning/idea to generate dynamic imbalance in following situations.
