Well I just had a bit of an emotional experience even though I did not know Mark. I was searching my posts to try and find information about a chess clock. And I found a thread I had started where I posed a question. Mark was the first to respond. And it was so him, to me at least, and so good. I must say I am quite emotional about it now realizing he is no longer here (I knew he had passed away some time ago but it took seeing his response to really touch me).

Only today I learned that Markovich is gone. It's not a surprise to me. I had the fortune to meet him on another blog after he had quit Chesspub. It was there that he told me that he was terminally ill and totally had given up chess to spend his last months with his family. I also feel privileged that I could say him goodbye.
It seems appropriate to spend this 9999th comment to his memory.

Very sad. I liked his posts and learned a lot from him, though the chess was a bit beyond me. Wink

I, too, have let the world interfere with my chessic interests of late, so am very saddened to learn of this news so belatedly. Markovich and I found ourselves on the opposite side of some debates on these pages, and on the same side on others. I valued his opinions and respected his chess knowledge. We were also teammates on the original Chesspublishing Champions' League team. He might have been pleased to learn that I have returned to playing open games...

Yes indeed, which is why I haven't been active here lately, but I still wanted to say belatedly how sorry I was to hear this news. I think Mark had hinted in a former post that he might not have been well. We shared an email or two about Durham -- he liked a restaurant near where I live and I'd hoped he'd make it back some day -- alas it wasn't to be!

Very sad news. I hadn't been in contact with Mark for a while (life has an unfortunate habit of getting in the way of chess sometimes).

We agreed on most things regarding openings for novices (based on a common-sense view that it's beneficial to spend some time playing open games and gambits) and we drew much the same conclusions from our junior coaching experience on different continents.

We also exchanged information on Alekhine's Defence several times - he was a meticulous analyst.

Rest in peace Mark.  I'm saddened by the news but can't help but feel uplifted by how much the members care about one of the most influential participants here.  I hope his family is made aware of how important he was to this forum and it's members.  Several years ago we started to collaborate on an opening of interest to both of us.  I regret not following through on the project or having had the opportunity to meet such a great man.

I always enjoyed his posts. And we exchanged private messages a couple of times. He had strong opinions, but he backed them up. He was a giant on this forum.

Seemingly (if somehow unsurprisingly) a very worthy life lived outside this forum too Smiley
