8. h3 does seem to dodge the complications, but it does offer black almost immediate equality. Something like 8...Be6 and 9...f6 just seems to be equal with a possible edge for black with his better central controol?

In Beating 1 e4 e5, Emms recommends 8.h3 as a way of avoiding the trickiness of the 8.Nxe5 lines.

I find it interesting that here nobody is mentioning the line which I find most testing of all for white:



I atleast think it must be worth some discussion, the only move seeming to give white an edge is 9. Nf3 and that's with precise play.

Unfortunately 4...d5 is just not very good because of the line given by Vladimir (although it's worth also pointing out 6...Be7 7.Re1 Bg4 8.h3 Bh5 9.g4 Bg6 10.Nxe5). If you want to play for ...d5, start with 4...Be7 5.0-0 0-0, after which White usually goes 6.Re1 nowadays to stop ...d5, but against most other moves it is OK.

I've looked into this just a little. The literature is extremely sparse. I don't know what the evaluation of it should be, but the line that was most interesting followed Tischbierek - Donev, 1995. 



After 14.Bb3, Black has ideas of a5-a4 and Ra5.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 d5?!

What is the current standing of this line - does anyone know? I've been unable to find posts on this forum about it apart from this old topic:

It seems to have been played by some not-unreasonable players, so I'm thinking it can't be that bad. Is there a refutation?
