Just a curiosity of mine, was the orange juice he drank a few years back during his games part of a contracting sponsor?

He is scheduled to play in the Isle of Man Open, an 11-round Swiss with very long classical time controls.

Good to know, thank you.

Well, in recent St. Louis rapid and blitz he seemed "just another 2700 player". Or perhaps it was his Evil Twin who played, who is merely a very strong GM. LOL. Let's see how he behaves in the Classical!

Yes that was very strange. But I think it was more of a blip given the year he has had so far.

Just listening to his interview at Norway, think Dubov may have had a big influence in his change of style and his resurgence.

Of course he can't win all the games in blitz vs the top 10 or so, but overall I think he is stronger than ever!

Well, he is officially back!

I think he is playing at his peak now, the match against Caruana seems to have energized him.

i'd say too much pressure, it can be stressful living up to high expectations

Agree with all the latest comments and thanks for the support.

Going back on topic though for those who have been following things in detail Magnus is looking a lot happier in himself now and his form is very much back. Very interesting interview with him in Tata Steel where he reveals a lot, and also admits he took too much of a gamble against Loek and is not proud of it. All that said though the kid is very much back on track!

I don't think it's necessarily a change of style as a whole.
His last two tournaments have been the Qatar Masters, an Open, and Wijk - which, while a "Supertournament", has a rather diverse field; he sports a 200pt rating advantage over the last seed (unlike in eg the Grand Chess Tour, where the lowest rated player still clocked in at 2750+).

Last year at Wijk he played several flank openings to experiment with; this year he is trying out some other things to increase his winning chances (which is needed here compared to eg the London Classics, since more decisive results are going to happen and a +2 result may not put him on 1st).

So for now I'd just wait, and see if he repeats this "slightly crazier" playstyle in a tournament with bigger avg rating

It's hard to talk about players' styles. Many players talk about others' styles but deny that they themselves have one! But this sure isn't "the driest dust," as Anand put it. The game against Eljanov was played like Korchnoi. Actually, Carlsen has always played by choice moves that are murky--not like Capablanca or Smyslov--but in endgames, for example, not so often as now on such a large scale with attack and defense in the middlegame. And his new opening weapon now--the London System, is something "ferocious"--just ask Lackdawala!   Grin
