I saw that, appreciated. These spammers seem to be getting more sophisticated, at least this one. Some of his posts were just general "oh this is interesting" which I cant see how anybody could detect.

Then others were "oh this is interesting" followed by insert external link to god knows what.

I can make it more difficult to start a new account, but at some point it becomes dissuasive for non-spammers too, and that's a shame. I think we've all been to sites where we gave up at some point because it was too much hassle getting an account, and I really don't want to put people off becoming useful members.

I have seen a recent rise in complaints about spammers. I'm not sure we actually have more spammers than in the past, but there seems to be a perception that the site's anti-spam system isn't working well enough. 

Currently, we have a spam filter and any new member must make at least five posts before they can start a new topic. Moderators will usually step in and delete any spam that gets through within 24 hours of it being posted.

My questions are:

Is this enough?

How can this be improved without deterring legitimate new members?
